My boom snapped in half. I purchased a new extrusion and I'm in the process of reassembly. The gooseneck fitting has a post with a spring around it that extends inside the boom extrusion. I looks like it has a shock absorber function, but that would mean the post moves in tension with the spring. The post does not seem to move in or out. I've tapped on one end to possibly free it, but I'm not sure if this post does not need to move and if I tap too much, I'm afraid I'll damage it.

That setup is to allow “roller-reefing” your mainsail. With sail raised, you would pull the boom out which released the lock and then while easing the halyard, you twst the boom rolling the sail around boom reducing it’s area, after rolling in about 3-4 turns, you will have reduced the sail area by about 1/3. Now release the boom, allowing the goosneck to lock again to prevent unrolling.
It is an imperfect way to reef, but it will work better than nothing!
