I was wondering if the boom for a Hunter 22(not sure how old) would work on 1975 Hunter 25. I don't have the original to compare it to, but the length seems to be the same 8'. Also the gooseneck is missing and did anyone know where i can find a replacement?

Thanks John

It is probably a Kenyon spar. I would check with Rig-rite to see if they can help you out with parts.

DAMCO for spars.

You might check also with Dwyer Aluminum Mast Co (DAMCO) in Connecticut. They are truly lovely people and very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Their DM-375 boom is a dead ringer for the Kenyon 'D'. Also it can be had with marvelous end caps for internal outhauls and single-line reefing. I drool over this web page every time I see it. I want this boom so badly!

Rig-Rite, though they claim (surely genuinely) to be the sole supplier of 'official' gen-1 Hunter spars, are very expensive. I asked for a quote on a new boom from them-- just the tubing, mind you, and their shipping cost was much more than the actual product cost. I could have driven 150 miles and collected it myself much more cheaply.
I got a custom-made mast step fabricated for my boat for half the price of their Kenyon 3625 one.

Mind that the original gen-1 H25s (pre-1978) had a longer boom than necessary. The sail is only about 8'3" or so but the boom will be 9'6" or 9'8". This is not just to facilitate the outhaul-- it's to allow the boom to extend aft farther to reach the sheetline attachment point at the back of the coaming, since these boats did not have bridgedeck travelers (like the 1978 'gen-2' boats did). If you have already solved the traveler problem you may not need so long a boom. I cut 8 inches off mine; but then, I have a bridge deck for the traveler.

Thanks for all the info. I was hoping to use this boom since I already had it, but it sounds like it won't be long enough. A little history here. I'm building the Didi 26 from Dix Design, I picked up this Hunter cheap for something to sail in the meantime. Most of the boat is in good shape and is ready to go, the problem is thru some mix up i got the wrong mainsail and boom. I've contacted the person I bought it from and he said he had sold a 22 to someone a couple of years ago and can't find this persons information. My fault, i should've checked everything. Any way I'd like to keep this inexpensive so if anybody knows a place to get a used main and boom I'd be very grateful.

Thanks again

John

Bacons in annapolis has a selection of used booms as well as used sails galore. since your on the shore it might be worth driving to the "boat graveyard" thats on the side of US-50 between queens town and easton. I can't remember the name of the place but they have all kinds of old boats on the property, they claimed they wouldn't sell a boom/mast separately but sure enough 20 min and $50 later my buddy got a replacement for his bristol 26.

PS I have a couple of booms here; one is for a Mariner which is slightly undersized for the H25 but would serve.

Thanks for the offer. I've seen a few on ebay that are slightly longer than you suggested. One of them is a Dwyer DM-5 it's 11ft long, but i wasn't sure if it was a good choice for the 25. I'd be interested in the Mariner if you think it will work. I live in Pa about an hour from north from Burlington, so picking it up wouldn't be problem.

Johnny-- re: boom

An 11-ft boom sounds like it's somehow way too big for the H25. I think the DM-5 is 5 inches high. The DM-375 is 3-3/4: which sounds more like it.

The boom I have out back was identified as a Mariner boom by a friend who sails Mariners. it appears to be a DM-375 section and is 10'3" long. You would want to cut off the outhaul end for use on an H25; otherwise it might even foul the backstay. But this is not a hassle (and the price is right). I have to do this on my boom anyway.

This extra boom I have has all the hardware on it for the gooseneck end and a tang on the back end. There's a little cleat on the front of it.

E-mail me if you're interested. I have photos if you need them (this was going to go on eBay).
