Boom Flex/Replacement

Using a loose footed racing main in fair breeze, all tightened in, I get maybe 2 inches of flex in the boom. I'm not used to seeing this much on any of my other boats and wondering if that's normal. It looks pretty scary and I sure don't want to break it.

I'm thinking either reinforce or replace. Definitely holding off on relocating the traveler a foot or so forward, thus sheeting almost the center of the boom.

I am sure mine is standard as the rest of the boat when I got it was as basic as it could possibly be. Thanks and I'll look into it. If there are specs for each boom available, direction would be appreciated.

The race package boom has an internal 8-1 outhaul mechanism and kind of a bar running along the bottom of the boom.
The standard boom, like I have -- again discount model -- had an external 1/1 outhaul.

I think in the owners manual it shows both types. Yes it shows --- Page 29.

What is the serial # of you boat and what year?

Hull 402, 1988. While a flexing boom is surely far from the weakest link in my performance chain, it is disturbing and surely affects performance. I've started looking for a new boom and might just make one... I suspect there aren't a bunch of Sport booms floating around, so my options will surely be limited. Experienced advice welcome. ;-)

I have never noticed any flexing in my "cheap" boom. I wonder if anybody else has seen flexing. But, on the other hand the boom does look "small".

Try contacting "tech support" at Catalina. They may shed some light on the subject.

If the flex of a spar supplied by the manufacturer is still giving you indegestion, and if Catalina Direct isn't delivering enough happiness, then stop by one of the spar maker web pages. e.g. http://www.seldenmast.com/firstpage.cfm or http://www.zsparsuk.com/ or maybe these guys http://www.sailspar.co.uk/yachtproducts/booms.html

You can select a "section" that is beefier than what you have (maybe with the help of insides sales guy?), spec a length, caugh up a CC# and wait for the Fed Ex guy to show up. The Seldon catalog has "boom ends" outhaul, vang, main sheet, reefing system, and gnav designs. Or go to Annapolis Performance http://www.apsltd.com/ and look at the systems for J-22's. Then you get to drill, bolt, and pop in some rivets (a 3/8" pop-rivet gun is bigger than your standard Lowes tool). When you're done, it's all yours!

It's amazing the amount of engineering that those old blue-nose type boat builders did with wood and iron.

And it's kinda fun putting together new stuff, eh?
