Boom end modification

I'm thinking of modifying the boom's end to extend it a few inches. The swivel attachment at the end of the boom that holds both the topping lift and the mainsail halyard is attached to the boom via a hex bolt. Has anyone loosened that hex bolt? How is it attached to the boom's end. Is there a nut permanently attached to the boom's end (inside the boom) that the bolt fits into? Can the bolt be extended out a few inches? I don't want to take out this bolt unless I have a clear picture as to what the unintended consequences will be. The cap on the end of the boom is fixed into place via a number of screws, once these are undone does the cap come off easily? Thanks for your help. Hal
