Boom Cleat action on a 260

I realized today that I have never had to personally adjust the reefing line (or the topping lift line and the outhaul line) at the gooseneck end of the boom on my 2004 260. I always had crew to do it for me. These are the 3 cleats in a row with a lever for each cleat below the line as it exits the boom end. My question is: What action is required to release the cleat? Do I have to pull on the line while pulling forward on the cleat lever? Or do I have to somehow push down or aft while I'm pulling on the line? How do I jam the cleat when I've made the adjustment? Thanks for any help.

I do believe my 95 H23.5 has the same hardware. To jam: There are two actions that seem to work. One is to pull the line down and back horizontally, then, keeping that backwards and upwards force, ease the line forward so it grabs and jams. The problem with this is that you loose about a half inch back to where it came from. That's a lot if you only have 1:1 or 2:1 on your outhaul. The other is to pull straight down, and then push the jam lever forward and up with the other hand. Not so much given back, but leaves only one hand to pull down. To release the cleat: I think you just pull straight down, or down and a bit forward, and with gravity the cleat just falls open. Ummm, either that or pull the line down and pull the lever down and back at the same time. Those boom cleats are almost OK for reefing line and topping lift, but terrible, I think, for the outhaul. I put a couple of double micro blocks between the aft end of the boom and the clew of the main to give 4:1 purchase. Then, I put a block with cam cleat at the base of the mast and increased the outhaul line length so it lies on the companionway cover and down into the cockpit (or cabin if the hatch is open). Not very tidy, but now I can finally get full use out of the outhaul. I had hardly touched the outhaul for the first two years I had the boat, but now I adjust it all day long. ...RickM...

You only need to pull on the lines and the cleats let go. This can be done from anywhere you can reach them however to re-jam you need to be at the boom for the you need to push the little buggers up whilst there is pressure on the line for them to hold.
