I have in mast furling on my Beneteau 361. The outhaul runs through a boom car to a sheave in the the clew of the main. When it was new, the car would slide aft as the out haul was pulled to bring the sail out. This would keep a shallow angle on the outhaul reducing the energy needed to bring the sail out. Despite, many cans of Sailkote the boom car always needs a push aft to get it started. Any ideas?

External or internal track

Just curious if you have an external track mounted on top of the boom or whether the track is part of the boom itself - my B321 has the latter which sticks like crazy despite using tons of of Sailcoat - it seems that Beneteau switched to the external track mnounted on top of the boom in about 2000 when they came out with the B331 - I suspect your problem is similiar and the only answer seems to be to buy and mount the external track with some decent roller bearings

Not easy to lube

I have the same boat and that car is not easy to lube due to the nature of it's design. Just a couple of suggestions for what they're worth. Try spraying a rag with the lube then running the rag through the slot. Try pulling the car back by hand with minimal tension on it to see if perhaps there is a burr that developed somewhere. Try running some very fine sand paper through the slot to clean off any accumulation of gunk that may have built up, then lubricate. If all else fails remove the car for inspection, cleaning and lubrication. Good luck let us know what you found. Mike

Be careful

My 1996 281 has Z-Spar (US spar)in-mast with an external boom track. If yours also has an external track on top of the boom and you decide to remove the car, watch out because as you slide it off the track, there is nothing to hold the torlon bearings in place and you will be picking them out of all kinds of nooks and crannys for months/years to come. I am speaking from experience because I took mine apart last fall. Buying new ball bearings is pretty expensive and I couldn't see any way to get them back into the car anyway. I ended up sending the car and all the bearings I was able to salvage to US Spar and they sent me a replacement car at, what I consider, a reasonable price. The replacement car comes with the bearings installed. It is mounted on a short, modified piece of track that you butt end to end to your boom track and roll the car on. While I had the car off, I thoroughly cleaned and lubed the track. I also found 2 or 3 burrs that I filed off. All works very smoothly. Good luck.

No bearings

My 361 doesn't have the bearings you speak of, I wish it did. The car is basically an inverted T that rides in a track the length of the boom. The whole assembly is subject to collecting dirt and rain. Cleaning and lubricating it a couple of times a season keeps it working well. I would imagine it wouldn't take much to have a burr or two show up on the underside of the track in the boom. Getting to it to smooth it back out will be the challenge. Mike

Water

My manual from U.S. Spars recommends washing the bearings with a forceful stream of fresh water to clean the bearings and track. Torlon bearings require no lubrication. Jim

Internal track

My 2002 B361 Hull #210 'does not' use the external track. What I gather from the posts is clean and lubricate the best I can. Thanks
