If you are looking for a great sea story to read by the fire on a cold fall evening, pick up Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea. This is the true story of the whaleship Essex that was deliberately attacked and sunk in 1820 by a huge sperm whale. It was the basis for Melville's Moby Dick. Once you read the first two pages of the preface, you won't put it down. Enjoy. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Farley Mowat's "The Boat That Wouldn't Float" was one of the books that I read on my summer cruise - highly recommended!

Top two books on sailing

If you can find a copy of "Across the Western Ocean" by William Snaith, you will find an incredible well written book about racing Figaro, his Sparkman and Stevens wood yawl. The book is out of print but some libraries have it. My second suggestion is Herb Payson's "Blown Away" a delightfully written book that if it doesn't make you laugh, I'll buy the book from you. I've given a number of copies away to my friends. Not only are his book funny but they have much wisdom in them. Herb and Nancy now live in Port Townsend, Washington and by a quirk, their boat, Sea Form is now there under new ownership. It has been damanged but is being repaired.
