I have a Friend who's boat (an '82 Bombay Clipper 31) has a problem at thedeck to mast area.Basically the deck is compressing (sinking) at the base of the Mast (at the Step).Interior Bulkhead is sagging about 1/4 inch or just under. My thinking is to unstep the mast and inject Epoxy in this area and then add a plate to help spread out the mast load a bit more.Has anyone had a similiar problem as tis with thier boat and/or with a Bombay Clipper in particular??

compression

We have friends who suffered compression of their mast post under the deck of their Catalina 30 due to the fact that Catalina had used a wood block as support under the compression post rather than steel or fiberglass. After about 25 years the block was full of water and one day decided to compress more fully in the middle of a race, thereby cracking the cabin top... They handled the situation very well and removed a portion of the cabin top and secured a steel plate under the mast to spread the loads, and of course and repaired the wood blocking, solving the situation very nicely. None of the repairs are noticeable. Pat

Sounds alot like...

all the posts about Hunter 31s and 34s with compression post problems. Many viable ways to fix, depending on what area has deteriorated; mast step, compression post itself, deck between mast and post, stringer area under compression post, etc. Not that big a deal, just takes some planning and a little TLC.
