Hi All, has anyone subscribed to Boatworks magazine? It is put out quarterly by the same publisher of SAIL and is good read. I subscribed to a 1 year subscription. The Winter edition hit the stands some time in early Nov. - I have yet to receive my copy (previous copys have been sent with no problems). I inquired with Boatworks subscription dept. about my missing sub. 4 times and they respond back everytime saying "it's being processed and I will recieve my magazine shortly". Anyone else have these problems with them? Rob

a Christmas Gift

gotr a subscription for Christmas.....they said 45-60 days for it to kick in......I bought the WInter edition at the store. I am HOPING that the magazine doesn't dwell on the Very Basics of baot repair but delves into something of interest (every once in a while)...I don't think we need another mag telling us what kind of line to purchase or how to "rig" the vhf antennae the best way.

My subscription to Sail was initially slow too.

Ive subscribed to SAIL, which was likewise very slow in issuing. But they sent the previous month, and present month back to back. NO problems since. I've heard others say they greatly enjoy BOATWORKS, and have no problems in their mailings. Both are well supported sailing magazines by folks I've spoken with. BTW, you can subscribe to SAIL for only $10 a year...a current amazing bargain !

Boatworks....

This is a pretty ambitious venture for "Sail" in that putting together a quarterly based solely on articles/photos that show you how to do "common" tasks is not easy (who makes their own masts??). Having said that, I've been a subscriber from the getgo and think the magazine is great. Perhaps like you, I just can't figure out when the next issue will arrive. I suspect problems with the production department there and hope the magazine won't fold (as I just renewed)....

Same

Sent my subscription in early September and still have not received an issue. I sent cash (stupid) and pretty much gave up. Guess from the sound of things they are just slow.

Some things are worth the wait

Rob, I've been buying mine off the newstand and every single issue has had a valuable issue on how to do something I need to do, so all I can say is, it's worth the wait! You would think that everything you might read there would be covered in DYI magazine, but DYI seems to be heavy on powerboaters and guys who worked in boat factories, and their approach is often too complicated for us ordinary joes. And the Saturday afternoon cable tv program about boat repair seems to make it a point to do everything the hardest way just to impress us with their skills...

Call and get a name

Call back and get the name of the person you speak with. I have been a supscriber for two years. My winter mag was late. I called, got a name, and was told if I did not receive the mag in a week to call back and ask for the same person. She promised to mail one to me if I had to call back. I received my mag two days later. I submitted my boat for their extreme make over but have not heard who the winner is. Would be nice to have a free make over for the boat. All in all I like to magazine.

No Problems

I have been subscribed for almost a year and have received the three issues, so far, with no problems. It is a great mag for the DIY sailor. And a great read for anyone to help understand the systems and mechanics of a boat.

similar response

I also subscribe to BoatsWorks, the DIY offshoot of Sail, & enjoy it immensely. The price is right, the articles are appropriate to my skills and boat (for the most part), although it would be nice to see it six or more times a year. Like others, I found the first issue slow to come, and often find it on the news stands sometimes a week or more before I get it in the mail. I get ticked off sometimes, because in my estimation, one of reasons for subscribing (aside from a lower cost) is getting it sooner than it becomes available at the newsstands, even if only by a day or so!

Letter to Editor

I sent a copy of this thread to Peter Nielsen, the editor of both "Sail" and "Boatworks." Here is his reply: "THanks Warren, feedback like this is invaluable. Happy new year PN"
