HELLO SAILORS, I HAVE TO REPLACE MY OUTBOARD MOTOR ON MY 25.5' HUNTER. CANNOT DECIDE WHAT MAKE AND WHAT SIZE TO BUY. CONSIDERING A 9.9 OR A 15HP MERCURY 2 CYCLE ENGINE - THE REASON IS MAINLY THE WEIGHT. ANY BETTER SUGGESTIONS.

Re: new motor

Hello Thomas, You might consider the Honda four stroke series as the EPA regulations in 2006 will all but render two stroke worthless. Especially the purchace of a new, rather than used motor and the prices. If maintained well, a 9 horse should move a boat of this size fine and will last a long time. I have noticed that many boat rental business buy the honda 4 stroke series, Another consideration, a four stroke is a lot less noise than a two stroke.Good sailing to you.

Tom, Honda 9.9 4 stroke is the way to go. I have

a very old one (84) on my 95 Hunter 26 and it pushes the boat at hull speed and also charges up the battery. A 4 stroke burns straight gas without the oil so you have clean air behind the boat when you need to motor or when fishing. Shortly 2 cycle motors will be things of the past and hard to resell unless you want one for racing. I totally recommend the Honda 9.9. Mine is 19 years old and minds better than my kids. It also works when I ask it too and it is something I could sell. Ray S/V Speedy

Honda 9.9

My 25.5 has a manual start Honda 9.9 and it is really nice. The weight is perfect for my engine mount, which has springs to counterbalance the weight. It has plenty of speed at partial throttle, with some left over. It is easy to start and quiet.

AUXILLARY OUTBOARD

I PURCHASED MY HUNTER 240 LAST AUGUST AND PURCHASED A YAMAHA 4-STROKE 4HP. I LOVE THE MOTOR, IT IS DEPENDABLE, QUIET AND SIPS THE GAS. YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK AT THE 6 OR 8HP FOR YOUR 25.5. THEY HAVE THE F-N-R LEVER ON THE TILLER. ABOUT 85LBS AND AROUND $2000. GOOD LUCK!
