Geeze Herb..

We must have has our type in sync here, but if I knew you were going to write this in such a clear and professional manner, lot better than my ramblings.., ya could have saved me the trouble...;-( One thing I forgot, amongst mucho more I suppose, is: go for a 50 ton ticket, and a year or more later it is not difficult to document additional sea-time to get your 100 ton, no re-test required; this is what I did. Same test. Good luck, delivery business is fun for a few years, but you'll soon be cured of that!

Just for Arguements sake....

As always, it is never safe to say that "all of the......(whatever) is a certain way. But it is safe to make generalities. And of course, these generalities vary from area to area. but here goes anyway. I took this from seaschool.com ..."We Give You The Course and We Give You The Test!" Does this not imply anything? Anyway, i was a crew boat capt (100 Ton Masters) in the oilfields of the gulf of mexico. These are not statistics, but they are personal observations....most captains that i have worked with had less than an 8th grade education and were equite illiterate. And these were the ones that passed. Long story, and dont have the ambition to write about that. But anyway, most if not all of the oilfield related boat companies had a hard time recruiting capts because during good economic times, there was just not enough of them. They sent many of there senior employees to sea schools on a regular basis and most dropped out or failed. Under the new situation, with the sea school administering the tests, the 'graduation' rate is much higher. Either the students miraculously got smarter or thet test administration is not the same. The crew boat companies are 'paying " for Capts. Maybe where you live, life is different.

Capt. papers

What made you think I wanted one? I was just curious is all. I don't really see the point for me to have something like that. Being called Captain, well sure whatever, but I prefer Skip, or GYBE!!!!! I like that one best, save the skull from getting smacked. LOL.

According the the CIA factbook: "Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II." That would make Italy 145 years old. You are still our favorite neighbor to the north and Whistler is the best ski resort in the world.

Drinking in Ontario! *yks

The new law applies to motorized vessels only. If you don't have a motor then the new doesn't apply; sailboats without motors, wind surfers, kayaks, canoe; etc. Ontario has the most restrictive laws against drinking on the water. Ontario Liquor Licence Act: Conveying Liguor In A Boat "Sec.32(3) No person shall operate or have care or control of a boat that is underway while there is contained in the boat any liquor, except under the authority of a license or permit." "Sec.32(4) Exception - Subsection (3) does not apply if the liquor in the boat (a) is in a container that is unopened and the seal unbroken or (b) is stored in a closed compartment." "It is illegal to transport beverage alcohol in a boat unless the beverage alcohol is in a container that is unopened and the seal unbroken, or unless the beverage alcohol is packaged in baggage that is fastened closed or is not otherwise readily available to anyone in the vehicle. In a boat, the beverage alcohol must be stored in a closed compartment." You can have a six-pack of beer in the cooler if the cans aren't open. If you have a bottle of whiskey or bottles of wine with the seal broken you have to have it stored in a closed compartment. "Sec.32(5) A police officer who has reasonable grounds to believe that liquor is being unlawfully kept in a vehicle or boat may at any time, without warrant, enter and search the vehicle or boat and search any person found in it." Don't wave at the Mounties holding a beverage while underway; it could look like you might be drinking an alcoholic beverage and he can stop and search your vessel. Ontario Liguor Licence Act Regulation 718: Consuming Liguor in a Boat: "Sec.3(7) A boat with permanent sleeping accommodations and permanent cooking and sanitary facilities, other than a boat used to carry passengers for hire, is considered to be a private place while the boat is at anchor or is secured to the dock or land." Your vessel must have a sleeping cabin, head, and galley. A sleeping bag, porta-potty and camping stove on an 18 foot Boston Whaler doesn't qualify. Drinking in public: "...in Ontario, you must not "display alcohol to the public", whatever that means. If you are fastened to a dock, you should check with the marina to see if it's a "private club" or public place. Or just steam off the labels before you carry wine to a picnic table. In parks, even that will get you into trouble..." You can drink on your boat while at the marina if the marina isn't open to the public. If it's a public marina or if you are at anchor, you either have to drink in the cabin away from the public or drink out of a paper bag or remove the labels. Fair Winds Clyde

AND ... in Ontario ... No Porta Potty to pi$$ in

As we all found out last week in a different thread ... Porta Potty's are illegal in Ontario. No boat can be equiped with a Porta Potty in Ontario.

New York should adopt this rule

After todays episode with a powerboat 25 footer pulling 3 kids on a tube, I'm all for this kind of rule in NY this guy cut between my Newport 30 on Stbd tack and another boat that was drifting down the Niagara River. Not more than 50' between us, not bad enough he did this but one of the kids fell off the tube as he crossed my bow, had it not been for my sons watching the tube i would have never seen the kid. With a loud call to hard to port I turned the boat and missed the kid by about 4 feet. And had to avoid the drifting boat. Your heart is in your mouth loking at this kid in the water this close to you. After we gained control and the guy stopped only to get the tube and other 2 out of the water before even thinking about going to get the other kid out. I called to him and said you never cut a sailboat off that close, I almost hit the kid in the water, he just shrugged his shoulders, with a grin on his face and never said a word, some rather large ladyon the boat kept saying just keep sailing and go away. The numbers were not very clear, but the name is Docs Holiday. I'm responsable for my crew and my craft, so I have the beer at the dock, trust me I'm not a prude but, I had a frien killed by a drunk boater. It took the police a year to get him, and his excuse was but I was drunk.
