I just recived my BoatUS premium. I feel Boat US has taken very good care of us in our trials and tribulations of Boat ownership. However Our premium increased from $890.00 a year to $1300.00 per year on our 46' 1985 Morgan. I did have a claim last year. And I do realize that due to this years increased Hurricaine season the insurance industry has taken some major hits. My question is has anyone been hit by an increase this year also?? I have heard that Boat insurures understand boat problems better then home insururers. and are willing to cover boat related claims more redely then insurance companies that do not cover boating specifically. We are calling our home insurance company today and get a comparible qoute before I send this check in. What are your experiences??.realizing this has been covered in the archives but due to the claims THIS year this may be new info. Thanks Rob

State Farm and Hurricane Charlie

My boat had damage (rub rail, fiberglass, and autopilot). Marina estimated my damage and State Farm had check here within a week - no questions asked... was about $3800 worth. But, my boat is only 2 years old, so I am not sure how they would be about repairs on older boats. BTW, so far no increase in rates...

No Surprise!

I'm with Boat US, but mine doesn't renew until March. I've been anticipating a boost ever since the damage during the hurricane season, and I haven't had a claim against them, ever!! We are all going to pay for their losses. This is no direct shot against Boat US, they are like all insurance companies, love to get your premium, hate to pay out.

No Bargain

Personally, I don't think Boat/US has been a bargain in the past. I have had them in the past and went to another insurer. I looked around and found a better price. Granted, the hurricanes had an impact on everyone's rates this year and I am expecting mine to go up, also. But there are other insurers out there. Look around and good luck. :)

Boat US

My BoatUS premium increased this year, but by a very reasonsable amount, IMHO. I lost my previous boat last year to Hurricane Isabel, and my experience with Boat US was very positive. They had hundreds of claims to deal with just at my marina, and did so, in a reasonable amount of time. I'm quite pleased with them.

Boat Insurance thru US Power Squadron

Rob, About 5 1/2 years ago I considered both Boat/US (since I was a member) and also US Power Squadron Insurance (I'm also a member) and found that US Power Squadron Insurance was more responsive to my application and had lower rates. They have had modest increases over the years, but not every year. I have not had any claims to file with them)thankfully). I still have the boat with them (a 1990 Hunter 33.5

Age a factor?

You are hitting the ripe old age of 20 on the boat and that may be a factor....did you ask? I was told by my Progressive agent when I went to roll my policy from the 'inactive'(in my backyard for a year) to floating status that he could not have insured it had I not already had a policy in place due to her age... 1979. That was a year or more before the latest barrage of hurricanes...and this years premium came due between hurricanes and actually went down a few bucks. Go figure.

Insurance

In 1988 I bought a new 35 ft boat and insured it with Boat US. I had that boat for 11 years and my insurance did not have one increase, not even one dollar. This past spring I bought a five year old used 32 ft boat and the premium is even less than my original cost in 1988. I did shop around and at least last spring for my resume, it was cheapest with Boat US. This next spring I will be checking again and will look at the US Power Squadron. Rob, as someone else said, I think the boat age had something to do with your premium increase. Thanks, Paul

Allstate - no increase

Just received my policy and had no change in the premium. I've had no claims. 1986 H34 $198.

Age, Location, and Claims

My BoatUS insurance went up $179 this year. My 1984 Hunter 31 is berthed on the Gulf of Mexico. Even though she survived Ivan without a scratch I'm sure my preminum will increase again next year. With the insurance now nearing a thousand dollars a year I may have to consider other options such as self insurance. The only reason I would keep insurance is the liability. Does anyone know if you can obtain only liability insurance?

Tom, is that $198.00 a year?

Tom is that a year, if so is that full coverage, and how much is it insured for. my 86 34 is 376 a year through boat us and is insured for 33,000 Tim Welsh H34 AKA Cabo Wabo

Value Limits

I have been shopping for insurance for my new (old ) H29.5. Boat US had a real good price to insure my boat but they would only insure it for part of the value. Kind of strange. Looks like it's back to Progressive. We don't get to many hurracanes up here on the Finger Lakes but the premiums still stay high.

Yes, $198/yr

Looking at the policy now: 1986 H34 - coverages: Actual cash value 34K, Equipment 3.4K, watercraft liability 500K. Boatus matched the price last year but I stayed with Allstate.

My H34 is more like $350!

My H34 premium is more like $350 and I have the same coverage and am just down the bay from you! Do you have a layup period or something like that? I need to find out how to get that deal.

What is everyone's deductable

Mine 2% of agreed value, recollection is that electronics are excluded no matter cause of loss, sails excluded too for practical purposes. Pay about $750 annual, with about 45K agreed value and $500K liability, thru Zurich. Got maybe a $50 increase last year. '85 boat

West Marine insurance price doubled !

I have had West Marine insurance on my 1984 24 foot S2 for several years. This year they changed insurance carriers and doubled the rate from $400 to $800/year. I was able to get the same coverage from State Farm (I have homeowner's and car insurance with them), for less than $500.

I use State Farm

We have an '88 O'Day 302. Insure it through State Farm (they also do house, car, and business), $500 deductable on an agreed value policy. Cost is less than $450 per with 300k liability and a 1,000k umbrella. The really nice thing is, our agent is a family friend so we've had zero problems. Dave C.

Boat US seems to be a better deal

for inland waters rather than ocean areas. Most of the complaints here on BoatUs costs come boaters on the ocean, e.g. Rhode Island. My premiums with BUS on the Ches Bay have been very reasonable, but when I compare their rate to others to go south, i.e. below Beaufort, NC, the BUS difference seems to diminish dramatically. BUS is based here in Alexandria, VA, might that have some difference? Any other thoughs?

Staying with State Farm!

Insured through State Farm for 3 years (no claims): $300,000, 2% deductible, on agreed hull value of $74,000. = $890.00 annually. Premium was reduced in March by $90.00/yr. Just got quote from BoatUS, Over $500.00/yr. more. Jon McClain

Check that insurance STARBOARD!

If you will check closely I think you may find that Boat/US will cover you in a club race accident; but State Farm and other "marine policies" exclude ALL racing. So even if you are just a club racer, where are you more likely to have an accident?
