Does anyone have any experience with these ships that will transport your boat? I live in Maine and would gladly sail to RI but I really have no interest in sailing the ditch for weeks. Anyone know the cost? http://www.yacht-transport.com/index.php?sid=34&l=eng Tim R.

We have a member in out sailing club (Maine HSA) who shipped his 450 down a couple of years ago. He then sailed it back. It cost somewhere around $5K to do so (his is a large boat and they charge by sq ft). It went to St. Thomas and he sailed the BVI. They put you on a very tight schedule to load and unload. You have to be there (US & Islands) for both events to get your boat on/off and you have to be waiting on your boat for the radio call with the engine running. A guy in my marina did the same thing last year. I saw one of the moving boats underway in Newport last year. It's mighty strange seeing a boat carrying boats leaving Newport under a full head of steam!

Rick?

They let the owners ride on the trip? Or was it crewmen doing the painting? One thing is the boat should have all food and diesel removed for shipping. But my understanding is that no one does.

5K!

That sounds like such a great price I went to the site and requested a quote for next fall.

Higgs?

Please don't quote me on the price. The number is only hearsay!

Another option is a delivery skipper

Probably less money but more wear and tear. I know a very experienced pro in your area, let me know if you'd like his email address.

I am holding you legally responsible and expect you to make up any difference should you have been in error. I suspect the amount is low, but I figure why not submit a quote request? If it is that cheap I have to give doing that a lot of thought for an extended vacation next winter.

the price and what you find out when you get it......Sounds like a great way to take a vacation when time is not on your side.

I read about someone doing this

on sailblogs.com. You take your boat to Miami and coordinate with them. You motor your boat into the center of the ship. When all boats are in they drain the water and put the boats on jack stands or equivalent, kind of like a floating lock. I can't remember whose blog I read who did it though or what the cost is. http://www.sailblogs.com/member_list.php

My Quote

I got a quote from Yacht Transport just over two years ago to move my 356 from Newport, RI to St Thomas. I was a little surpized when it came back at just under $13,000.00 one way. I decided to charter instead.

Dockwise Transport

Coincidently I just got a quote from Dockwise Yacht Transport to transport my Catalina 36 from Newport to St. Thomas at $10,549.00 one way including a 20% discount for early booking. The transport boat goes down every November and comes back every April. They have a very good website which explains everything you need to know. Ann Souder the booking agent for Dockwise in Newport is very helpful and knowledgable. Her cell phone is 401-439-6377. We were thinking of doing it next winter instead of hauling the boat but changed our minds when we got the quote until we can stay there longer. If anyone is planning to go down in November 2008, please let me know.

When I was in St Thomas and bringing our H34 home,

I called for a quote to the Northwest. They only off-load at Vancouver Canada. They quoted $13,000.00. Not bad, but,,,,I was going to Florida anyway and now I had the wind and current. And we were still cruising, not delivering. And I trucked from Ft. Lauderdale for half as much.
