Can anyone suggest a solvent or effective method of removing taped boat stripes? My stripes are near to impossible to remove. All suggestions appreciated, thanks. M.C.

Wall Paper Scraper

Believe it or not, I had the easiest job removing both the hull and cabintop stripes with a 4" wide wall paper scraper from Home Depot. No heat gun or hair drier, no rubber 'eraser', just a $4.50 scraper and then $2.00 for 'Goof Off' to clean off any remaining glue residue. My stripes were 17 years old and in bad shape but pushing the scraper held at a 30-40 degree angle removed 4 to 12 inches at a time. Look thru the archives and you will find many other options.

Heat

Hairdryer will do it. Warms up the tape so you can gently remove with a straight razor. Caution: Unless you're a pro, have a pro put the new stripe on. You'll be happier.

Ditto Heat - Then Acetone

Hair dryer would probably work, but I used a heat gun. Didn't use the hottest setting, and didn't take long at all. After getting the stripe off, use acetone to remove the remaining adhesive on the hull.

I'll second the heat gun method!

I just removed the the old vinyl letters and reg. #s from my 1989 Hunter 26.5, as well as the tape stripes. I usesd a low setting on a 2 speed heat gun. I found that too much heat would melt the vinyl making it break or stretch. I was able to pull most of the stuff off by pulling back at a sharp angle. I did use a plastic putty knife to avoid damaging the gelcoat. After the vinyl was off, I used some "goof off' to remove the glue residue. I would not advise of using acetone as it can be more damaging to the gelcoat (and your skin).

Rubber eraser wheel

Mark There is a little wheel that is a gum-rubber material that will go on your drill, and you basically high-speed rub the stripes off. They work great, I have two of them and have used them successfully on our twenty-two year old stripes. Unfortunately, I am at work and can't remember the name of the little wheel or the company that makes or cells them. But there are probably some references to it in the archives. Steve Dion told me about it, so maybe he will chime in here. Take care, Ron Vanderveer

rubber eraser ditto

Thats what I used to remove all of the stripes and the name on my hunter 34 after I tried a heat gun, the eraser works faster and alot less glue to clean up.

Go with the wheel!!!

Get the wheel, chuck it in a variable speed drill (you don't need the special body shop tool) and run it slowly. It peels stipes with no muss or fuss. I used it last month.

Rubber Wheel

I used the eraser...looked just like the one in the link. I didn't order from here but they are available at many autobody supply houses. Worked great for me.

Do you guys plan on adding a new stripe?

My 1983 H34 has the original stripe. It's faded and cracked and I'd like to remove it. My question is after removal will there be a difference in the shade of white on the hull from where the stripe was with the rest of the hull? Is it best to add another stripe? Where do you get the stripe from? Thanks, Joe Mullee

Plans to add a stripe...

I want to remove my taped stripe to paint my boat a completely different color and then add another stripe to the freshly painted hull. I have no need to worry about discoloration however if you're not painting, I would add a new stripe. I removed a stripe from a car once and the color of the paint under the stripe was much darker.

Strips/Painting

With all this talk about stripes and painting I thought I'd ask what I have been wondering about. I have 85 Hunter 25.5, the strips are faded, cracked and I really don't care for the color. The oranges and browns popular in the '80's. The hull is not a real white a more off white or light eggshell color. I would like to remove the stripes and change the wide painted area (orangeish) to a blue color. How would this look with the color of the hull AND I was wondering if I should even change the color at all.......will someday someone look back and say a classic was ruined, no longer has original colors? Thanks, PJ

Classic was ruined...

with those 80's stripes it wasn't a classic to begin with in my opinion. Your boat would most likely look more like a classic w/o the stripes. The danger is damage to your topside and discolaration.

pic of new stripes

Here is a pic of the new stripes I painted on my boat using imron. I say it again, the heat gun sucked to use. The rubber wheel on the bodyshop tool did the trick.

I'd like to see it. Can you try again? JM

Stripes Stripped!!

Since I posted this question, I have taken on the task of removing my stripes and lettering. To me, the definitive way of removing my taped stripes and lettering was by razor blade. I used one of those painters window handheld razor blades. Worked like a charm, and then I used a solvent by the name of "Oops" which removed the sticky substance from the tape. Thanks for all the advice, Best regards, M.C.
