This PHRF is killing me Is there anyone on this list who is racing a Hunter Legend 35 that is able to meet or exceed their PHRF. Here in our area the powers-to-be have determined that my HL35 has a PHRF of 144. I have been racing for 2.5 years and have yet to come anywhere near that rating. I base my observations on the fact that when I go against boats of comperative size with ratings of 155 and 157, I can't hold a candle to them. From the start they walk off and leave me: they point higher and reach faster - yet this rating of 144 sez I should be ahead at the mark. In a ten mile race they cross the line 10 minutes ahead of me and I still have to give them time. Frustrated. Anybody really sailing the HL35 to a PHRF of 144??

Try Here

If you can get to this site you will be able to find PHRF ratings form several areas thru Yahoo/ boating/organizations. Or try www.phrfsocal.org this is Southern Cal. PHRF .

Hunter 420 Passage San Diego
Lake Ontario says 132

PHRF-LO rates your boat at 132. If your sailing non-spin would be the same with a 12 second adjustment. Specifically what type of boats are consistantly beating you? Maybe there is a problem with their rating. What is the relative condition of your sails? Does your competition take the sport more seriously? Are they out practicing? Are there boats that you consistently beat?

PHRF 144 seems OK for a Legend 35

I don't know what your competition is that is rating 155 and 157, but the Hunter Legend 35 is faster than most cruising 35's. For instance, you should be faster than an Ericson 35. My Legend 37.5 has been rated 129 (non-spinnaker) by Galveston Bay PHRF Committee. They rate a racing cruiser C&C 37 at 127. That's hardly fair that the C&C only has to give me 2 seconds per mile. GBPHRF rates the Legend 40.5 at 133. I have to give them 4 seconds per mile. It is most fortunate for me that the Legend 40.5 that races against me is not sailed to its potential. If you have the wing keel, don't sail it like you would a fin keel. It will not perform. Make the polar diagrams to get the most performance from your boat. Follow your polar diagrams, not the fin keels. If you are really serious about racing (and have the $$), get a feathering prop. You get a 3 second per mile penalty from PHRF, but you can go close to 10 seconds per mile faster. If you are racing against sport boats (Mumm 30's, J/80's etc.) forget it. There is no way the PHRF accounts for high performance boats. I'm always way behind them, even on corrected time.

Legend 35 performance

I used to own a L35, (raced it in eastern Long Island sound)it rated 144 also. In very light air the keel was too much drag and not fast. In anything above 6 kts. of wind the boat will do that rating. 12 kts or more it'll exceed it's rating easily. The boat is stiff and it needs a certain amount of water over the keel to lift. Ease off a bit (in light air) and keep up boat speed (don't force it to point)You should do better than most boats when reaching so you may be over triming. Also, if you have a fixed prop. get rid of it. A folding prop. is the best performance boost for the buck. (And that comes from a sailmaker)Finally, to those that race in Galvaston Bay, I have no idea where they get your ratings or how, so you have my synmpathy. Anyone wanting info on how to trick out a Legend 35 or 37 I'm at ukessex@earthlink.com. Good luck, Mark. Chief Handicapper- Eastern Conn. Sailing Assn.

Work at it

I agree with some of the other replies. I race my 1993 35.5 infrequently, but I do well with my 132 rating. I ususally race in 12 to 18 knots true and can point pretty well in comparison to other boats. A couple of tips. A clean bottom is very important. I took first place two weeks ago with new bottom paint! Get a folding prop. If you are serious about racing, get a couple of racing sails. I have a Shore 140% mylar genoa which really makes the boat go. Rig an adjustable backstay. Get the boat going by triming the genoa first and then balance the boat with the main. You will lose a lot with much weather helm at all. Good luck
