I just purchased a 1992 H28. While motoring I noticed that if I let go of the wheel, the boat would begin a rapid turn to starboard. My friend has a Cal 33 and his seems to be much more balanced. Has anyone else (especially H28 owners) had the same experience? Was it correctable or is it just the way the boat was designed? Thanks for any feedback.

We got a new rudder
When I bought my 1999 Hunter 380 new, it would pull hard to starboard if you left you hand off the wheel. The boat would go in a tight circle to the right. I was told it was prop walk so I bought a Max prop which everyone said would eliminate the problem. It didn't. When i put the Max prop on, I had an engineer measure my rudder and he ascertained that it was curved which would send my boat to the right. I contacted Hunter (It was a very new boat at the time) and they sent out a vice president (who only knew about power boats) and agreed that the boat was not right. Actually, when he let the wheel go, the boat swerved so fast, he fell over. Anyway, they sent me a new rudder which was better but still had some curve to it. I've since had it fared out and it doesn't bother me any more. Hunter rudders are made by a different company and they have had this problem from time to time.

I haven't noticed any problems with mine, but really haven't paid that much attention to it. Any information on chain plates, or the manual for the boat would be of help to me. I bought the manual from Hunter, but it lacked info on the engine and such. My boat will be a work in progress, money dictating what I do. Let me know how things come out.

Try this.... Get her up to speed then throttle down and shift to neutral... Let go off the wheel. Does it still pull right? Then Rudder... Else may be the prop shaft? There is force acting on the rudder. The prop wash hit the rudder and exerts a force on it, but at low speed she should move more balanced.

At moderate speed, approx. 2kts., I can leave the boat unattended into the wind with the wheel locked and go forward to lower the mainsail without too much worry. At higher speeds, I usually drift off the wind. I don't know if that helps you.
