Greetings all, I'm curious. I've looked around at many diffrent boats trying to get prices on all the diffrent types out there. It seems that the prices vary greatly for the same size, make, and evne model of boat. One person is asking 15k, the other is asking 50k. I don't get it. Why is there such a large descrepency? I'm interested in what everyone has paid for their boat, and what shape it was in at the time. What do you think the going rate should be for a 272 LE? That's the boat I'd most likely want to upgrade to. Thanks, Josh

You can get a fair estimate of what a boat is worth by following the instructions at the bucvalu site which ask for the equipment and upgrades found on the boat and your appraisal of its condition. If you are unable to come up with an appraisal of the condition of the boat on your own, you should have it surveyed. I did an appraisal of an "86 272LE for a friend awhile back and bucvalu gave me a value of $14500 in bristol condition. I'm at school right now so I hope I'm giving you the right web address. Tom

Yeah, that was the right site...Im sure it's no diffrent then what the NADA provides on their site, and you don't have to pay for it. Check the link. I'm just curious as to what others have paid and why one boat is 12k and another is 27k when both are about the same. It would be diffrent if one was in poor repair and one was almost new. But a lot of times in looking at examples the only real diffrence is the last time sails and rigging were replaced. New sails and rigging can't justify a 100% cost increase. I also understand that it's what the market will bear, and the value that the seller sees in his boat. Just wish it was easier to figure out if you are getting a deal or not. If a number of people respond, especially to oh...I dont know...272LE prices, I'll be able to compile about what I should be spending for the boat

Josh,Trying to decide on a boat that will suit your needs is hard enough. Now, to find that model available for sale can be difficult. The availability of boats for sale is not as easy as finding a certain used car for sale. Price is determined by: 1)Your desire to own that boat!! 2)Condition and cost to restore!! 3)Location varys the price! I recently purchased a 1982 O'Day 30 for $14,000 in overall good condition. Search around it took me 6 months to locate the right boat for the right price!!! Can't wait for the spring!!! Good Luck!!

My dad once told me that "the value of something is what someone will pay for it." That leaves a wide berth for likes, dislikes, anxiety, and informed. A boat is worth what someone will pay for it. If someone doesn't like it they are not going to pay alot. If they love it they my pay way too much. Who can say what is too much.... Josh, On a 272 there are many differences in the stock boat because of all the options. Diesel, wheel ,tiller......Add too, the extras installed by assorted owners. In many cases you can if a boat has been improved or if it has or has not been maintained. A selftailing winch upgrade could have cost the owner $1000 and up. A charging system on a diesel could have been quite costly. Someone who just had everything rebeded could have paid over $1000. Don't look at prices. Look at owners and their care of the boat. A $16000 boat with new sails selftailing winches, a good charging system and that has been rebeded and bottom painted is a much better value than a poorly maintained for 11000. Between the extras and the cost of upgrading could put a 11000 boat cost to 18000 in the blink of an eye. If you look at enough boats and figure the cost to get them in the shape you want it , at some point you will know if a boat is a good deal or a bad one. Don't just look at the price for "your" boat...
the prices of other comparable boats will also give you a good feel for what the market is like in your area for that size boat. Check out the prices of the Catalina 27, and other mass produced boats. You don't need to look at a lot of 272LE's to get a feel for what they should cost.
