My 1972 Ericson 29 is looking very shabby : ( It may never have been painted. There is some fiberglass damage at the rub rail on both sides slightly aft of the beam. (must've been bashed at some point or other). In terms of solidness I'd say it's a darn good boat. I picked it up cheap ($2k). How much would it cost to get it painted and looking nice? I'm not inclined to do much, if any of the job. We plan to hang onto it for another 5-10 years. Thanks or your input in advance. I'm in south haven Michigan and sail on lake Michigan.

If you have the damage repaired prior to painting and then paint the hull above the waterline the cost would excede the purchase price of the boat. I did the same on my Catalina 22 a few years back. There was no fiberglass damage but with the sanding and filling of all the scratches on the hull, priming and painting we had over 30 man hours in the project. At $50 per hour that is $1500 and most yards charge $60 to $90 per hour. Materials were another $500.
If you paint the Bottom and topsides then double to triple costs would be expected. On older boats this is something that most owners can only afford if they do it themselves. Then you need materials only and a total job can be done for about $1000.

No way to give you an educated guess on repair costs without, at minimum, posting pictures of the damage and boat's condition.
If I were in your shoes, I'd try to find a few local experts who will examine your boat and submit an estimate. Start by calling local boatyards and ask your marina manger.
