Hello,

Listed is my 1979 Hunter serial number. Does everyone agree looking at this that mine was hull number 771? Here is the number off the transom, upper right. HUN70771M79J-30

Thanks!
Bob

Maybe it is 771 but . . .

I doubt that Hunter made 771 H30's by 1979. I do not understand the "HUN70" part either. My own H37C number starts with "HUN37". The number following is "074" and is my sail number. In other words they only made seventy-four H37Cs by October of 1979: HUN37074M79H. I think it is more likely that your boat is number "71".

Here is a link to an HIN site that has been referenced many times here:
http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html
It never worked very well for me. For example it shows my boat to be a March boat, the letter 'H'. But maybe the original owner was wrong.

Hunter 30 Serial number question - Pic attached.

All,

A picture of the serial number on my 79 - h30... Does this help clarify anything with regards to serial number? Is number 771 possible if hey started building the 30 in 1974, according to this page?

Regards,
Bob

Ed:

I think they sold a lot of the Hunter 30's. These boats orignally sold for around $30k out the door. That is very possible that they sold that many of them. I did not think they made the 30's as early as 74, but I am not sure. They were making the H'25 during that era.

We have 3 or 4 of the Hunter 30's in our marina.

Confused about H30 HINs.

You really think there were 771 H30s built by 1979?! Does not seem possible. I thought the H30s were first built in 1976. The oldest one on Yacht World is a '76.

Are we seeing two boats with identical HIDs? Or are Bob Alden and Robert1224 one and the same? Sure hope so. :)

Re: Confused about H30 HINs.

Ed,

You have figured me out. I am both Bob Alden and Robert 1224. But, that is the easy part! The tough part is being certain of my hull number. In the double volume Practical Sailor Sailboat Reviews. PS suggested they believed there were 1000 plus of the Cherubini vintage Hunter 30's built. When they contacted Hunter, Hunter would not give out an actual number built. Also looking here they list the model as being made from 1974 on. We also have on this site three skippers who review their 1975 Hunter 30's. That said, I am not any more certain then the rest as to how many built, but given all available information it seems that there were probably more then a thousand and they were built at least from 1975 on.... So. I have posted a picture of the number on my stern. Perhaps we'll never know with certainty but I am making a best guess it is indeed, boat number 771 and that Hunter had four plus years to get to that number.

Happy sailing and the fairest of winds,
Bob (Robert1224) Alden

More on the H30 HIN.

In the KnowledgeBase there are over 300 owner entries for the H30. Some of these entries include the HIN. See if you can find a pattern here:

1977 H30 HUN50749 M775
1978 H30 HUN50780 M78A August
1978 H30 HUN50694 M77H March? Should be a '77 ?
1979 H30 HUN70703 M79F January
1979 H30 HUN70633 M79C30 October
1979 H30 HUN70617 M79B-30 September
1979 H30 HUN70771 M79J-30 May Bob's HIN
1982 H30 HUN71149 M82D

Pretty confusing, eh? There are three 1975s in the directory but no '74s.

Re: More on the H30 HIN.

Ed,

I think you've figured it out, good job! It is curious that Yacht World has no 1975 h30's listed. Must be the owners love them too much to sell. 74's? Don't know about that, but our very own page lists 30_74-83 , so go figure. Very good detective work though Ed. Looking at the boat numbers you copied, indicates beyond a doubt it has to be the last three of the five digits following the manufacturer. Case in point, two of the numbers are HUN70633 and HUN70617 (Both 1979's). If it were the first three digits, the two boats would have the same number. Again, Kudos....

In any event, sail well....

Not convinced about h30 HINs.

From the 1979 examples to the 1982 it looks right, 617 to 1149. But how do you explain the 1978s? And if there really are that many H30s out there why haven't some of those owners weighed in on this? Still going to reserve judgement, 711 in three or four years still seems high. Seems like Hunter could just give us a ballpark number. You know that they know.

Hope you don't mind me putting in my 2 cents worth here...

I used to be a 1978 Hunter 30 owner. I'm not sure exactly what my HIN looked like, but I do remember that my confirmed hull number was '54'

BTW, although I don't own her any more, I wonder if anyone out there knows that old boat of mine and how that boat is doing? I last owned her in Ocean Gate, NJ and the last known name (painted on the stern) was/is 'Penniless'. Is she still around and sea worthy?

I loved that boat and I'm just wondering how 'an old friend' is doing.

I did not have it listed in the owner's directory, so here is one more for you. The HIN for my 1982 H30 is HUN71155 M82F.

Don't forget guys;

This subject was covered years ago in this very forum. Hunter in those days STARTED the hulll number sequence at 100 or 101, The hull number, 591 on my 1983 Hunter 33 is 591, indicating it is actually the 491 st Hunter 33 built. Also the last one built on the line. A few more were sold as kits called Hunter 33 Quest. Just to add some confusion.
