I put my H22 in the water for the first time last summer and at the end of
the season found that another boat has the same name and was there first.
What kind of problems might I run into having the same name and what
could be the implications if I change the name?? Good luck, bad luck??

Jim, you do not say if you named your boat and are attached to that name. If so you have a problem. Besides that the other guy may not appreciate you having his name either. My suggestion is just to change your boats name. The name changing procedure is not a big deal and can be found all over the net. We changed the name on our boat from the PO's. It was fun and all our sailing buddies joined it! Any luck issues, good or bad, can be resolved by properly addressing Neptune and his compadres!

The only potential issue is VHF hailing, but on your 22 I'm guessing that should not be a problem. Barring that do not worry about it. Every decent boat name adorns dozens of transoms. No one gets to call 'dibs'. But if you are looking for an excuse to have a party, by all means go to it!

Jim,it is easy to change the boat name. All you have to do is find a virgin over 34 years old to pee in the bilge to wash away all the bad luck and then pass around a cheap bottle of wine tilll it is gone.Boonsfarm works good.(Strawberry Hill).I like to get a few bottles just to be on the safe side. Good luck.

Renaming ceremony is great party at the dock. Invite the neighbors to share in the fun. We did it this way and had a great time.
PS: Neptune does not like cheap wine. Do it up right, or suffer the consequences! ;>)

Be very, very careful. Ten years ago, I undertook a name change for a family boat we own in MD. Despite trying to follow the ceremony exactly, 12 hours later I was under the knife for an emergency appendectomy in Chestertown. Never needed one before or since. Coincidence...perhaps.

What if you just add a suffix- like "II" and/or your home port below.

May be the virgin you hired for the bilge peeing ceremony wasn't quite a virgin afterall. You know they have this surgery in Thailand whereby they could make one a virgin for only couple of $. I guess that won't fool Mr.Neptune. :naughty:

two Loons and never a problem

My last boat was named Loon. When we moved from Iowa to Manitowoc, we found out that there was a boat named Loon already in the marina and on the same pier. Never really was an issue for either of us.

Luck? Almost every boat owner in the world lucky enough to own a second-hand boat has changed the name on their boat.

I believe they only allow one unique USCG Documented boat name per "region" and there are 5(?) regions.

I agree with the thought that there are MANY other boats that share the same name... You could just change the home port.

For USCG documented vessels, they don't require that the NAME of the vessel is unique, but do require to vessels with the same name to have unique hailing ports.

There is no requirement, however, for the vessel's documented home port to have navigable waterways... ;) If there were another vessel in Tampa with the name 'Just Enough' when I documented her, I would have just changed the hailing port to Valrico (where I have my house).

Have fun, and let us know what you decide!
