3rd day with the boat, just noticed this and measured it.

The list is to starboard, 1.5 degrees

the boat is tied very loosely on the port side

Any ideas/explanations?

I see no water anywhere

Be glad it's not more...

1. New boat to you, chance for you to load it up with your stuff to correct it.

2. My boat (and most C34s) come with a port list, as do C36s.

3. Could be a whole lot of things, none of them of any issue at all.

We keep our boom to starboard, get on the boat from the port. I can't see the list anymore. I never bother looking at the inclometer anyway, even when sailing. Who knows if it was ever put on right anyway...

Water tank, Fuel tank, Batteries, Head, Extra Sails, You name it? ( what is the layout down below?) So, are you telling us you have a 2-3" list? Mine also lists to Starboard, but then again, my porta pot, 2 group 29 batteries (same as 31's), stern locker and 6 gal fuel can, galley and most of my tool and spares bags as well are on that side. No wonder she tilts a bit like a drunken sailor.

Most boats list to one side or another a slight bit. It is often due to the asymetric loading, say having heavy equipment or gear like the batteries on one side or the other. By planning how you stow your gear and supplies, you can often balance the boat out.

You should check to see that the mast is centered on the boat. (port to starboard) Hoist a steel tape measure to the masthead or use your main halyard. You must use a halyard which is centered on the masthead as some multiple headsail halyards will be offset. Check to see if you have equal distances from the masthead to the chainplates on each side of the boat.

The other possibility may be that the keel is slightly offset. This is not an easy fix and not worth the effort. As others have said, adjust weight within the boat to get the boat in proper trim.

Joel, give us a video tour of your new boat. It must feel like a mansion compared to the old Mac 25. Where are you docked?

This boat is HUGE compared to the Mac 25. It's currently in Oxnard. We're going to sail it home on Sunday and Monday. (Oxnard to MDR, MDR to Long Beach) We will film the whole thing.

I did some more research on the list issue. We drained the gas tanks the other day. I believe this is the culprit.

Ironically, before I noticed the swagger, we all agreed to name the boat The Mardi Gras.

Very fitting! :)

My 84 Hunter 25.5 also listed to starboard. I was told that it is due to the prevailing wind direction. I believe this is the correct answer. The 120 lb outboard is on the port side and so are the head and the 2 batteries.

I know a guy that sailed a Cal 34 to Bermuda at least three times while I knew him. He fitted a baby stay from the anchor locker to about 3/4 the mast height so he could use it as a cutter rig. I guess he liked being able to use a small jib or storm sail from it. Very solid boat, I think you will like it, they are also pretty fast for their day.
