I have a 1978 Catalina 30 which is currently ensured by State Farm. I am located in New Jersey and moving the boat about 15 miles south of the current location. When informing my insurance agent of my plans she informed me that State Farm will not cover me in my new location (no idea why being that it is same conditions and sailing region). I have been experiencing difficulty finding reasonable quotes from other insurance companies. Most of the quotes are in the range of 1K$ or more. I do not understand why this is being that my current premium is $585 a year. Anyone have suggestions for other reasonable insurance companies for an older boat? Any input/feedback would be appreciated.

We have our 1980 boat insured with Boatus. We tried several places before using boatus. 20 years is the common cut off age.

American Modern Ins. Group

I had to change when WM changed their carrier about three years ago and tripled my rate. American just needed photos of the boat and last hull value. 550.00 a year for a 1974 P30 with 15k hull value and 250k liability. I had one claim due to storm damage during Hugo and they paid as soon as the yard sent the bill.

Rated tops in the country. They are awesome to deal with. Been with them for 25 years and I have no complaints. They are on the higher side though. The way I see it, I will pay extra for the great service they offer. And they include unlimited towing. I have never used the towing but they say they will reimburse any licensed towing outfit. They see it as protecting their investment. Tim R.

Problem

Companies like State Farm don't know what they are doing when it comes to insuring boats. As a result you will get some idiotic responses when you change circumstances. I ran into the same problem with Allstate, who had been wonderful when my boat was in WI, but got quite unreasonable when I moved to NY state. They don't know boats. I would go with a company familiar with boats - like boat US. You will need a survey that is less than 2 years old.

If you have homeowner's insurance

you should check with your agent what they want to insure your boat as well. They will generally give you a better price if you have several policies with them. It is worth a phone call or two. Our boat is from 1967 and most carriers will not accept us because of our boats age but my partners insurance company does extend coverage to our boat as well as his house (and cars presumably).

BoatUS still insuring our 1985 H'31.

We sold our 1985 Hunter 31 last year to a friend in the harbor. It was insured with BoatUS and they have continued to insure the boat for less than $300/yr on one of their standard policies. They did require an in the water survey to cover the boat.
