Water is pouring in from the hole in the centerboard trunk on our o'day 17' 1982 day sailer which we just purchased. Since it is the hole through which passes the cable which controls the centerboard position the hole is below the waterline. How do we plug this hole. the boat is filling with water.

There are two holes in the CB trunk for the control lines, niether should be below the waterline. However, some owners have reported having problems with water sloshing up through the forward hole that the lift cable runs through, and there is a fix that involves removing hte plastic "donut" that the wire runs through (it will just pop out of the hole with a gentle prying.) and enlarging the hole to accept a threaded pipe nipple that wil lbridge the gap that some boats have between the deck molding and the actually CB trunk.
I've never had that problem on my 1979 DS II, but thought that I had saved the instructions for the modification.... can't find it now! You might find it on hte Day Sailer Association's web page on the discussion pages? I'll keep looking myself.
However, as I say...... the holes for the up cable and downline are both above the normal waterline so should not be leaking.

In the drawing that I've attached the adjusting tackles are not shown for clarity, but the outlet for the lift cable, being above the level of the cockpit sole (which is above the waterline) is definitely above the waterline.

Thank you. We will look into that. We think we solved the problem. Realized the extra plug was not an extra but was needed to close a drain hole in the stern which was not visible from the cockpit.

This is a great forum. Glad we found it. Thanks for replying.

Well, that is a different story....<GRIN!>
I doubt that your CB cable outlet is leaking then. Forgetting the bilge drain plug will definitely fill the bilge with water! I forgot that once, thankfully I checked the bilge before leaving hte ramp......and then saw the plug sitting in hte cockpit! Normally, I screw it in while painting the bottom of the boat since my boat stays in hte water for the season, that way I KNOW it is in.... but that year....well ,I must have forgotten it! Thankfully, as I say... it was still out in hte cockpit and I was able to reach over the transom and screw it in, then pump out the water. The pic below shows the 2 critical plugs, well actually only the bilge plug is "CRITICAL", but both are important as is the one for the cockpit self-bailer. Some boats have the bilge draim off-center, about where the "X" is in my pic.
