Boarding ladder and hatch covering

I just bought a 1987 Hunter 23. The owner handed me the key and said he was leaving EVERYTHING, which is almost everything I need. I would like to ask other 23 owners about swim ladders. Mounted or hung over the side. Also, I know a good canvas hatch cover over the cabin is $400.00 or so. I was thinking about rigging a tarp with pvc pipe frame on top of the boom connected to the lifelines. Any ideas or pictures? She hasn't been sailed much the last few years as the owner's health didn't allow him to sail. He kept her clean and started the 6 hp Johnson up once or twice a week. She was all fixed up and ready to go to the dance. I have taken her dancing three times this week and I think she is loving it. Thanks and I am glad to join the Hunter 23 family. Captain Norman

congratulations

Congratulaations on the new boat. Welcome to the forum . I have an h23 with mounted swim ladder, cant say much about the ones that arent mounted . Lots of people use those hatch covers but in the 11 years we have had ours have not needed it . good luck Mike

Transom ladder

The previous owner left me an aluminum and plastic ladder that hangs over the transom (looks like two candy canes with rungs between them) . It works fine and I'm on the wrong side of 250 lb (so was the P.O. for that matter). It also takes up very little room in the cockpit locker when not in use. Peter H23 "Raven"

ladder

Thanks for the replys. Has one of those plastic ladders for my old stinkpot. I think the transom has enough slant so the ladder will work. Captain Norman

personal tastes

I have both a homemade rope and wood ladder (requires some agility) and an aluminum and plastic ladder. Both work fine. So a I regard a permanently installed ladder versus a removable as a matter of taste. Regarding a tarp, I drap a tarp over the boom, secured by bungies to the side stays and to the mooring pin on the aft corners. If we're staying on board, we stretch the whisker pole over the boom and tie into the back corners of the tarp. Works great, and provides protection from the elements, including birds.
