As a follow up to my fishing post what do you folks do with bluefish? By far the most prevalent fish I catch is bluefish while trolling under sail. I have found that if I immediately fillet them, throw some garlic powder and butter on them and cook them on the grill they are fantastic, saving the leftovers the next day even the cat wouldn't eat this garbage. What happens to this fish to make it so bad the next day??? Only keep what you can eat and let the rest go is my motto, no sense in having leftovers. Small blues about 5 pounds are great. I usually use two rods on holders mounted to my stern pulpit with Penn reels and rods and I use Rapala lures and have good luck also with tuna clones, bright green with treble hooks. I put a steel leader and a torpedo shaped lead weight ahead of the lure to keep it down, also about 200 feet of line. Catching a blue while cruising at 4 or 5 knots is a real trip, they jump out of the water and fight like hell. They get away easy however, I have fought many up to the boat and lost them at the last minute. happy fishing and send in those bluefish recipes.

Flyfishing

On a serious note. I've recently have gotten into saltwater Flyfishing. The thrill of hooking a Blue on a fly is unmatched, especially if is caught on a fly you tied! Obviously I'm fishing while anchored, however on occasion I'll troll a line and that too is a great experience. Though it sometimes get messy in the cockpit plus my children bolt for cover when one is landed. Freshly caught bluefish is my favorite and prepared and served immediately is not oily. I fillet the fish and cover with sliced tomatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms, oregano, a little sherry and I wrap this all tightly in foil and bake at 350 for 15min. It is easy, foolproof, a cinch to clean up. Enjoy!
