Blue Whales in Redondo Beach Bay

I went out last Wednesday on a whale watching tour out of Redondo Harbor. I was able to capture the locations of where they were seen. I will be going out again this weekend to see if I can find the elusive critters with the sailboat. Its hard to believe that man successfully hunted them with sailboats and dories.

Catalina 320 Dana Point
Last couple months they have been feeding off Dana Point, almost always 2 to 3 nautical miles offshore, they were on "the shelf". Where the bottom drops rapidly from 300 to 1500 feet they would be in the mid-slope (500 to 700 ft) area. One of their favorite places was a very deep hole (1700 ft) adjacent to a steep peak that rose to 300 ft. Check your chartplotter while out, they were staying down 6 to 10 minutes between blows.
One large male has been nicknamed "Bubbles" he has an unusual behavior that before he dives he does something with his mouth that produces a bubble fountain, only one I've very seen do such a thing and he does it every time he dives. You'll know him if you see him.

In July we sailed out of Mission Bay for an 8 day cruise to Catalina Island. On our way to Oceanside, we saw 2 Blue's off La Jolla. On our way home a week later we saw several Blue's off Solana Beach, and too many to count off Torey Pines. They were everywhere! AWESOME!

I'm jealous

Not much on the left coast that I am jealous of. But this is certainly one of the things I would love to see. Last summer there was a pod of Orcas in the gulf. Very unusual, and as usual I was in the wrong place.

we had 3 kinds of whales as we sailed from ensenada to cedros island-- was awesome-- we had grey, blue and humpbacked...was awesome to see them blow and jump and come so close to boat as they migrated north with their babies.. one of the best things about sailing west coast is the sea life in migration. you are right in the middle of it all as you sail

is rare to have em go into a bay , tho.
