Just thought I would pass on a little info I've come across while trying to put together a purposal for a contract (working on the high seas). Notice: a lot of satellite products are for land or near land and are DirectWay based so they don't work far of shore and only in the North hemisphere. Cheapest choice (Iridum Satellie Phone) phones start at $1500. Data Speed 2.4 - 10 Kbps (ok for email and zipped text work) $1.5 per minute $1.1 per minute for a 2 year pack of 3,000 minutes Best Quality so far (Sea Tel) Hardware for dish - $45,000 Monthly service - $1,000 Middle Ground (KVH) Phone prices range from $5,695 to way up there, difference being a little in coverage and speed but the more expensive phones charge data by the size, not time. Second cheapest phone is 3.69 Mbps. The cheapest phone charges by the minute for both data and voice and it's $1.49 per minute at 2.4-10 Kbps. Still looking into (RaySat) I called twice and got a recording...left a message with no reply yet. Sent an email to sales but no reply yet. From what I'v heard, internet isn't ready yet, but I thought I would check anyway. Maybe I could be a beta tester :)

TracNet

The new KVH TracNet offers 400kbs downlink and 56kbs uplink to 100 miles off shore. It is actually DirectPC. This of course doesn't help if crossing the Atlantic but does offer a greater speed for coastal US and Carribean.
