Blower Wash

In looking over the owner's manual for the Yanmar Diesel engine, they say that the turbo charger should be cleaned with "blower wash". Is anybody doing this, and if you are, where are you getting the blower wash and what is it??? I've located a source for the wash (Max Boring in New Jersey), but they only sell it in gallon sizes for about $100.00. I figure a gallon would probably last me a long, long, long time!! Any suggestions or input?

What is It???

What is this Blower Wash? How is it put into the engine? Through the fuel or through the air intake? Thanks for your reply.

turbo charger cleaning fluid

I bought some of the blower wash you are referring to from a Yanmar service/parts outfit called Boatswain's Locker in Costa Mesa, CA. Sorry I don't have the phone number, but it would be listed, as it's one of the larger Yanmar dealers in Southern California. It came in 12 ounce bottles, and wasn't too expensive. It was supplied by Yanmar, and is used by Yanmar mechanics when they service engines. (I had mechanics perform the cleaning twice: once in California and once in New Zealand). It is applied via a spray nozzle on the bottle (similar to a spray tip you'd find on a bottle of kitchen spray). You spray a few shots into the turbo charger while the engine is moving under load; i.e., at about 3400 RPM. You then spray a few shots of water into the turbo charger, and run the engine at 3600 RPM for five minutes to run the liquid through. I was told to do this every 600 hours. I have 3300 hours on my Yanmar 4JH2TE in my P42, and didn't perform this maintenance regularly. Just serviced my engine, and found that my turbo housing was corroded, and needed to be rebuilt. However, the cleaning may not have been the problem since I had some saltwater intrusion into the area due to a leaky watermaker (which I fixed after about six months), and that saltwater was likely the culprit. But I wonder if the cleaning would have prevented the housing corrosion? I will now clean my turbo on schedule.

Turbo Cleaning

Turbo blade cleaning is recommended by Yanmar to be conducted every 150 hours of engine operation. The high lube wash is injected in the amount of 10cc's over a 10 second period with a spray nozzle. The boat must be moving under load at hull speed. After injecting the wash, 10CC's of water is sprayed likewise into the blower intake. The engine should continue under the same load for about 10 minutes to dry out the turbo system. Boost pressure should be monitored during the process and if the correct boost pressure cannot be obtained, the turbo will have to be removed and mechanically cleaned
