Inside on the starboard ceiling, above the drawers, there is an access panel which leaks water with a red tint to it. The water, I believe comes from rain and washing, picks up somewhere a red residue. Any ideas where this is coming from?

Algae

Hi There, Your Bloody leak that is red may very well be Algae or a fungus that is left over from the last time the boat leaked. Then the water picks up the algae as it shows up in the boat. As far as where the leak is coming from, I would strat checking any Thru deck fittings you might have in the area. When you say access panel above the drawers, have you been able to either look inside the panel or shine a flashlight up inside to check and see any point of entry? For that matter you might try it in the dark and have someone with a flashlight on deck and look to see if you can spot the light shining thru anywhere. Hope this helps :) Dave LaPere

Leaky topsides

Dan: A couple years ago I noticed the same problem on my C22, when I inquired about it at the service dept. at my marina they advised that the reddish-brown color came from the water running through the balsa core. This means that the core is getting wet and if not properly dried out could rot out leaving a void and causing the deck to flex and feel spongy. In order to dry out the core requires an opening in the deck, like a mounting hole for equipment or you may have to drill a hole in the deck or ceiling. To fix this problem and keep it from happing again read the West System book. It will show you a couple ways to to take care of the core problem and how to seal bolt holes through the deck so if they happen to leak the water will not get into the core.
