I am a new owner of a Catalina 22 and working on it. Are the blocks bolted to the hull on each side of the keel for centering? One of the two bolts on one side is missing. Whatis needed to replace the bolt? Thanks.

Missing?

Hi, Those blocks are used for centering and for the pivot that holds up the keel. Correctly placed, the blocks should look like flat plates that are flush with the bottom of the hull. You need to replace this Stainless Steel bolt. I would go to Catalina Direct which can be found online and get replacement bolts as well as an Owner's Handbook for your boat. The handbook includes much info. With the replacement bolts comes a small amount of Loc-Tite to prevent the bolts from working out. I hope that the bolt isn't sheared off. That could come from someone over tightening the bolt. A sheared off bolt would make the repair more difficult. At any rate, you need to replace this bolt.

Hanger Assemble

The blocks are called hangers they house the 1" brass pin that holds the keel on the boat. Can you see that the bolts are missing? If so and there is a West Marine close you can get the 5/16 x 1 1/4" bolts you need there (be sure to get NEW lock washers) West Marines bolts are 316 SS. Me, I would chase a tap into the inserts to clean them followed by blowing out any dust. Clean the bolts using acetone before using blue Lock Tite. Put the two bolts missing in before removing the other two or the keel will FALL it weighs app 550 lbs. If the bolts are broke they can at times be removed slowly tapping on them or using a cobalt bit drilling a hole in the bolt then using an easy out. The insert isn't heavy enough to drill then tap to 3/8" so if broke bolts can't be removed the insert must be changed. Should this be the case it can be done from the bottom or inside the boat. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
