Just got back from block Island today and had a great sail most of the trip was
6.5 on the knot meter and 7 plus on the sog.
Hand to reef when the seas and wind kept increasing and the auto pilot was over powered,so nice to reef my furling main single handed was so much better than having to reef a regular main and than the autopilot did real well.
I was on the same tack until I got to the Ruins and the Gut when the wind dead on the nose and steep waves causing me to slow down to about 2 knots headed towards Greenport,I motored the rest of the trip.
It was good timing to drop the sails and switch to motoring just when a squall came through with 40 mph winds and blinding rain.
What I great rush it was with all the changing weather which started out sunny but
going down hill all day,I did get to see my first live submarine out near Block Island, wish I had the camera but I had my hands full as the winds and seas kept increasing and heeling from 20% to 35% at times.
I did have a 30 catalina with me when we left Block but pretty much lost him the first few miles and kept VHF contact during the trip.
Got a little nerve racking when enter Greenport with some lightening and thunderstorms,my dock neighbor got hit a month ago and lost all electrical instruments so it felt good pulling up to my slip safe and sound.
We did get to feast on fresh caught lobster and fish on Monday which was like a nice
warm summer day, both Sunday the day we left for Block and Monday were great warm sunny days.
Looking to do some more great Sept sailing.
Nick
