I am heading to Block Island this summer (after the July rOnDAYvous at Liberty Landing Marina...which I strongly urge you all N.E. O'day owners to attend) I wanted a rough estimate of how long it will take me to get there from NYC??? Obviously weather plays a part....but if I sail approx 5-6 hrs. a day (leaving Sunday morning from LLM, can I figure on being at Block by Thursday??) Also, wher is a good jumping off place the night before I go?? Mystic??? Fishers Island??? I wanted to see some friends in Niantic CT. while heading out that way. Could I get to Block in 7-8 hrs. from Niantic Ct. ??? or do I need to start closer by a few hours?? I wanted to get to Block as early as possible on Thursday to get a towm mooring before they all fill up. This is my first sailboat trip to Block Island.

Too many factors.

There are too many factors to give you even a rough estimate. First plot your course & determine how many NM to Block. Then figure distance and your estimate average speed per leg. This will give you your daily time. Also figure the Long Island Sound tides - they will make a difference (good/bad). Mystic to Block is about 18 nm while CT River (mouth) to Block is about 30 nm. But watch the tides!

LL NJ To Block Isd

This estimate is for moderate weather conditions and prvailing SW wind. Day 1: NJ to City Island ny day 2: City island to Port Jeff Day 3: Port jeff to Old Saybrook (CT River) day 4: Old Saybrook to Niantic/Mystic (practically the same Place Day 5: Mystic to New Harbour Block Isd. The longest it has ever taken me to get from Mystic to block is 5 hours. There was no wind And I had to motor at 5 knts because a fuel problem, could not exceed 1500 rpm. Nturally for this trip we had the guests from hell on board with their 2 dogs. I had to go below every 15 mins to bleed the fuel system. Chris s/v Tidesong

Extend your sailing days a bit and you could

easily knock off a few days off Chris M's schedule.

thanks

I can probably get to Niantic by Tuesday. ( we'd rather sail long days anyways) I'm mostly wondering about the trip from Niantic to Block. Is that a much longer trip than from Mystic??? I want to be at Block by thursday (as long as weather cooporates!!) I want the final leg to Block to be a roughly easy sail...the other legs can be long

Mystic to Block

Niantic to Block is about an hour or two longer (depending on wind and tide) than from the east end of Fishers Island sound. I'd stay in Noank, Mystic or better yet Stonington. You can tie up at Skippers Dock in Stonington for a nice dinner. If you feel like anchoring and don't care about going ashore, you might be able to drop a hook in East Harbor on Fishers Island -- the natives aren't all that friendly to visitors. It's a straight shot through Watch Hill passage or Wicapisett (if you're really adventurous) to Block -- about 3 hours. Have fun.
