I am purchasing a 1996 34mmII (hull 1312), and the survey showed many small blisters on the bottom below the water line. I learned from others that there was a gel coat chemistry problem at the time of manufacturing, and that some fixes were recommended such as applying a bottom barrier coat. The seller is having the bottom repaired. The gel coat has been peeled, and the bottom is currently being dried. The plan is to cover with two coats of 105 West with barrier 422, then six coats of interlux 2000. There were no apparent blisters on the rudder, but it is being sanded and coated with interlux 2000. Before the survey, the seller said that the bottom had a vc-tar coating. However, the surveyor said that the coating looked like a very thin layer of interlux 2000 (certainly not 10 mils thick). Questions are:1. should this treatment prevent further blistering?2 was it a common fix to put a thin coating of interlux 2000 on these boats?3. should I be concerned about the hull above the water line considering the apparent problem with the get coat chemistry?4. how prevalent was this problem (when did it start, and when was it fixed)?5. is this a noted problem that will reduce the value of the vessel in the future?and finally, does hull number 1312 mean that this was the thirteen hundred and twelve hull of the 34 mkII, or does the numbering include other model numbers?thanks.
