Bleach on fiber glass

I have an 1984 22 footer I have purchased from a previous owner who in turn bought it from a PO who in turn...you get the picture. One of the PO's left paint cans on the floor next to the head which have rusted into the fiber glass. I have used a stiff bristle brush and cleaning solution to try to remove them. Much is gone but much still remains. It alsmost looks as if the rust has actually penetrated the surface coat. I also have orange colored stains in the cockpit which have been left by water which must have had rust in it. Can I spray these areas with bleach to try to remove the orange color? Will bleach harm the surface of the fiber glass? Also, after the stains are removed, I assume that waxing the surface will keep it from staining so easily? You experiential advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Robbin

bleach

Robbin; Gel coat is very porous. Bleach works, but try some rust stain remover, available at WM, or even some FSR, also avail. at WM. Rinse well. Wax will seal the gelcoat, but needs to be refreshed every year.

try "Kilz"

If the bleach cant get it all off another solution is repainting. Household grade "Kilz" works great for any cover up. "Roll and tip" method works very well with it. I've repainted the entire interior of my '78 Cat.22. It even bonds the losse paint in the corners you cant seem to get to. Hope this helps... Russ

KILZ??

Do I find Kilz at a hardware or marine store? Is this a paint or just a paint additive? Roll and tip? You mean I have to paint this while on heavy seas? :) Seriously though, what do you mean by roll and tip? Thanks in advance for any more info on KILZ Robbin

Rust Stains

Check out the link below to the Catalina 25/250 website. The discussion topic has a lot of information concerning rust removal.

"Kilz" from your local hardware store

"Kilz" is a house hold cover-up paint."kilz" is the brand name. It comes only in white. Roll and tip means just what is says....Instead of spraying you just roll the paint on the surface your working. Then you use a brush to smooth out the bubbles. Use a solvent-resistant foam roller then go over with a fine, dry brush to smooth out air bubbles.Work in small sections. It will not come out as glossy as a spray...but I've got very close. I even "Roll and tip" my hull when it needs paint. The best way to learn is doing.(just start somewhere people cant see ie,under the table ect:) There might be a easier way to remove the stains, but if not you have options. Just remember, when your covered in paint and banging your head AGAIN, its because we love our 22's... Russ
