I've recently purchased a 1981 Hunter 27. Overall it is in good shape except for some mildew and black staining on gelcoat. A fellow boat owner has been using bleach solution like tilex on the grime. Is there any problem doing this either short term or long term?

Bleach and soap works well.

Jason: Bleach and soapy water works well to remove the mold/mildew from the decks. The one advantage of using bleach is that it kills the spores. You can also use a power washer if that does not get the stuff off. Be sure to be careful if you use a power washer around ports, deck hardware or any wood. It can remove the softwood and raise the grain. On the hardware and ports it can cause leaking.

You need to give it a couple of days...

to work. I wash my boat with the mixture and find its cleaner 2-3 days later when the bleach has had time to really work. Believe me,... it works.

Hi Jason, the guy that surveyed our boat...

advised me to use soft scrub, the household cleaner, to remove stains, mildew and grime on most all parts of the boat. When we purchased our boat last year it had quit a bit of mildew on the padded liners as well as grime inside and out. The stuff works great and no return mildew one year later. Terry
