Really need to know...

exact year/model. My understanding is that 87 and 88 models had plastic tanks that were located in the starboard lazarette and didn't have many problems w/holding tanks. Those boats were also notated as 35s vs. the 89-95 models that were 35.5s and had aluminum tanks. Start here by going to the tab at top of page that says "Boat Info." and click there, then move down to "Model Info." and click on that, then move over to the left column and click on 35.5. At bottom right of page under boats for sale are 2 articles on replacing holding tank and the bulkhead opening needed to do the job. There seem to be only 2 ready made tanks that will work and they are both 25gal.

holding tanks

Ron, I had the same thing happen with both holding tanks on my H430. When I contacted Hunter, they gave me the name of the tank co, ENZO (I think). They told me they could not locate the plans for the tank, somebody had 'mis-filed' them. They admitted that about 10 years ago they made the tanks 'to thin' and that they were building better tanks now. The way I solved the problem was to install a LectraSan in my bow head, and a plastic tank from RONCO PLASTICS for the aft head. They have a catalogue on line with hundreds of sizes and the guys at the factory are great to work with. Call Rich, (714) 259-1385 after you check them out on line, ronco-plastics.com and it will save you lots of time & trouble. We were able to find one of their tanks that fit well enough so we didn't have to have one special made. If your boat is old enough to have a tank problem, also check your hoses, you might as well replace them now so you don't have to play in the bilge again in a few years. I added a Y valve so now we can dump overboard when we are off the coast, and use the tank when we are in the Bay or close to the coast. Take lots of time to measure where you want to put the tank, and you might even think about changing the kind of head arrangement you have at the same time. Several peopke urged me not to use a bladder, and the more I read the more I agree. Good luck on the cleanup job, make sure you have ventilation when you use the bleach.

Pat! Yes, that is our Ron.

Pat: What boat did you have when you were in Hidden Harbor? I have been there for about 24 years. We originally were in the east harbor with our Hunter Cherubini 25 and then we got our Hunter 31 in April of 87. We love the place.

holding tanks & hidden harbor

Steve & Ron, sounds like you are both down there. We had our Dolphin-26 there in 1995 for almost a year before we moved her on to Folsom Lake. When the dam broke and we had to get off the lake a few years later we tried to get back in but there was no room so we ended up at Bruno's Island, also a nice place, but not the same; Hidden Harbor is 'a cut above'. For those out of our area: Hidden Harbor is a sailboats only spot right in the center of California's Delta. It's warm most of the year and HOT in the summer, and what ever direction the wind is blowing from there is always a great sailing spot where you can reach-off to your hearts content. Look on a map or chart, about 1/2-way from San Francisco to Sacramento you will see Rio Vista, and a LOT of water. Just a smidgion up stream is Hidden Harbor at the southern end of Steamboat Slough. This is the area where all the boats come up from SF Bay to escape the cold-wintery fog of the Bay all summer long. It is the west-coast's inland boating playground, with lots of ramps for trailer sailors and endless places for larger boats to anchor out or tie up. We plan on spending at least a month in the delta before we go out the gate and turn left for So Cal and Mexico in August. But Ron is right, you do need a good holding tank in The Delta.

holding tanks & The Delta

The link in my last post didn't work. I'll try this one, if it still suffers from 'operator' error just google "california delta" and you can waist a couple evenings checking it out.
