At some point in the past someone posted the dirty little secret that "marine black streak remover" is in fact a common, two dollar household cleaner sold for nine bucks at chandlerys. Does anyone remember, or know, what the supermarket version is?

Different trade names
3M and others have theri own versions with slightly different names which you can find on the internet along with their respective MSDS data. What you find in the supermarket may therefore be named similarly but might or might not be the same product. The3M version is basically a little glycol and surfactants mixed with water, ie, an alcohol and detergent cleanser. Regardless, it works great

Practical Sailor chose Nautical Ease brand as best choice and budget buy. The problem is that it is not as available as other brands. The next best performing was Heller Glanz, but this one was more expensive. Aurora, Spray Nine, and West Marine were the other recommended brands. There were notable differences in performance. No mention was made of common substitutes.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser... I have used this successfully on my ACP hull to remove black scuffs, and on the white side view mirrors of my car to remove deep black marks that I thought were permanent, with no damage to the finish. A plus - no chemicals to fall in the water!

For the input. I'll figure something out, just thought I might get out from under $9 bottles of soap. I hardly look at Practical Sailor anymore - I still get it, but I don't know what's Practical about $400,000 boat reviews. Oh well....
