Black Mold in Wood Paneling

We recently purchased a Catalina 36. There is pine wood paneling on each side of the saloon mid-ship. There are black mold spots everywhere. I've tried using Clorax disinfecting wipes to saturate the wood but it hasn't helped. Usually that works great to get rid of mold. The wood does have a clear coat of stain on it.

Is there any other product I can try or am I forced to sand and re-stain the wood? Help! I have a new business and am looking to stage beautiful products on my boat.... the mold doesn't fit in! :)

Try X-14. I've used it on my boat, though not on wood, with great success where clorox didn't touch it. Spray it on, wait a couple of minutes, rinse it off.

Step 1. Remove pine wood paneling.
Step 2. Discard.

Why would anyone put pine on a boat? Unless it's old-growth yellow, which in paneling it likely is not. It must have been added by the PO, for I've never seen pine paneling from Catalina Yachts. Are you sure it's not teak veneer or teak ceiling slats? The mold is a product of soft wood, which is trapping moisture. Additional trouble will be had with soft wood aboard.

...sorry I didn't actually answer the question :) I don't have any pine so can't rec a cleaning solution.

Bleach

In the good old days, before mold required a Haz Mat Team, we would just dilute bleach with water, and spray the effected area. Make sure the area is very well ventilated.

Good luck. Bob.

I think you need to "clean" the wood before you kill the mold.

I would first try something like Murphy's (one of the citrus cleaners) and once you have it clean you can kill any remaining mold spores.

If you don't solve the moisture problem first, you won't be able to eliminate the mold by cleaning. Mold spores exist in the air around you, and if you give it the right substrate, it will grow right back. Skipper is right ... if you truly have pine paneling and mold to boot, throw it away and start over with the right wood selection, or something that can tolerate moisture without growing mold.

I agree that it may not be the correct wood, but how many decades has it been there?

I will be trying: Sporicidin Enzyme Mold Stain Cleaner. Posting suggest it is better and safer than Clorox.
