Last year I told my tale of how easy my engine cooling thruhull
snapped off. Well this years averted disaster is the black hose on
the stern tube. I finally got the shaft out of my boat which
involved having a custom steel plate puller made that allowed me to
press the shaft out of the forward boss. I planned to remove the
stuffing box, pull out all the old packing, and clean it up. I
loosened the hose clamps and started to wiggle the stuffing box out
of the hose, when ...RIP...the hose ripped right in half. I'm no
materials expert, but I don't think that was supposed to happen. I
don't know how the hose condition could have been checked without
taking it apart. However, if you have an old Vega and that hose
hasn't been checked in awhile, then you might want to look into it.
