PAINT CAN LOOK GOOD IF PREPPED...
M.C., I have been spending the last six months ressurecting a neglected 1981 Hunter 27, and I ended up painting the toe rails. They were too far gone for armor all. However, to make it look better, I masked off the sides of the boat using old pieces of corrugated cardboard, and masked off the deck and anything else for that matter, and then I prepped the rail by cleaning it with a back side of a sponge, and some soap and water, and then I took some steel wool to it to clean it well. I then used Krylon outdoor primer in the spray can for metal, and put on a good even coat, and then when it was dry, I sprayed on three coats of Krylon Black Satin Spray paint (the high temperature paint seems to work well), and it turned out pretty nice. It is fairly rugged. The preparation took a little time, but the end result came out pretty good, not quite anodized, but much better than the mottled, grayed toe rail.
