Anyone know how I can paint the black railing on the side of my Hunter 25 1976. It is metal and probably won't hold paint. Thanks, M.C.

My experience

I have a 1980 Hunter 30 and a few years ago I painted all of the metal cleats on my boat with a satin black enamel from a local hardware store. They have held up quite remarkably with the effects of sun and the wear from dock and anchor lines. I usually need to touch them up only slightly at the start of each season. There are several products available to prep, etch and paint metal products such as the toerail. What you want and need depends upon your time, level of effort and desired look.

try armor all

I had pretty good experience renewing the old anodized railing on a 79 H33 with automotive Armor ALL I have seen a number of painted toerails and they tend to look....well repainted.

Use the wipes

Go with Terrys advise. I own a Hunter 27, 1977. I use the Wipes once a month. Several coats in the spring and then once a month there after. Works like a charm. Your local market carries them. Never paint. Good luck.

PAINT CAN LOOK GOOD IF PREPPED...

M.C., I have been spending the last six months ressurecting a neglected 1981 Hunter 27, and I ended up painting the toe rails. They were too far gone for armor all. However, to make it look better, I masked off the sides of the boat using old pieces of corrugated cardboard, and masked off the deck and anything else for that matter, and then I prepped the rail by cleaning it with a back side of a sponge, and some soap and water, and then I took some steel wool to it to clean it well. I then used Krylon outdoor primer in the spray can for metal, and put on a good even coat, and then when it was dry, I sprayed on three coats of Krylon Black Satin Spray paint (the high temperature paint seems to work well), and it turned out pretty nice. It is fairly rugged. The preparation took a little time, but the end result came out pretty good, not quite anodized, but much better than the mottled, grayed toe rail.
