Anybody has some advice as to what I can use to keeps birds of my wind vane at the top of the mast. I have had to replace two because of an Offspree decides to perch himself every day about 7:00 PM. I have tried d a plastic owl up to the spreaders to no avail..

destrutive testing

I would recommend some form of destructive testing - bb gun - pellet gun - M80 - 16 ga shotgun - 12 ga shotgun in that order as to achiebve success without destroying the rig terry

Raise a....

largish, bright colored penent on the main halyard. The flaping should chase off the birds. Greg

I agree with Greg

If you tie the flapping objects to a stick and raise the stick with the main halyard, they will be above the Windex, where they will be most effective. You might want to add a downhaul because if you tie the downhaul off right, the stick won't bang around at the top of the mast (happy neighbors). Hmm, that sounds so good I think I'M going to go do it myself. Thanks Greg!! Peter S/V Raven

This Works !!!

On our 94 P-42 we had the same problem. I took the Owl that you tried, however I fasten a round dowel (1" round) about 4'-0 long to the bottom of the owl. Fasten a round "eyelet" screw in the bottom and one about 1'-0 from the top on the side. Then you rasie the whole thing by attaching the upper eyelet to your spinaker haylard, attaching a down haull to the bottom eyelet. You must keep tension on the down hull to keep the owl in the upright position. If you set the upper eyelet at the correct height, the base of the owl will set on top of the mast head. Then the owl looks normal and is at the same elevation as the top of the mast. We had a bird trying to make a nest at the top of our mast head, put the owl up and the bird for the next two weeks would continue to fly by and around but would NEVER land. After two weeks the bird made a nest on the next highest sail mast in the area.
