I just bought a 1984 H31. Does anyone know where I can get a binacle to attach to the wheel pedestal. Hunter said that the manufacturer of the pedestal for that model is out of business.

I'm unclear as to wheteher you are referring to a

binnacle COMPASS, which has nothing to do with the manufacturer of the pedestral...

Ah, OK, the "pipe"...

I would think that you could replace the pipe from independent sources with similarly-sized metal pipe material cut to length. It should be a matter of measuring, finding a source, and duplicating the attachment method at both ends (perhaps with the aid of an independent machine shop). Then it can always be primed and painted white to match rather than chromed. I find that many things on a boat can be replaced with items from "non-nautical" sources of equal, or better, quality, and at a fraction of the cost...

mounting plate?

Dave: I assume that you are looking for the mounting plate that fits UNDER the engine controls. Do not make the mistake of fitting it under the compass and above the engine controls. Assuming that is what are looking for, we are in the process of trying to hunt this part down. If we find a source, we can let you know. As far as the S.S. tube is concerned, I think that this is available from Edson or one of the other mfgs. I might make a suggestion though. If you do this DO NOT mount it to the cockpit sole. Think about have a flange bent to fit the curve of the pedestal. This will prevent your cockpit sole from developing a leak and also saves your toes from getting stubbed.

Edson pedestal guard is your solution

I did it last year on my 1985 H31. I bought a pedestal guard from Edson. It comes with the mounting plate (fits under the compass) and floor brackets. Cost about $150 (maybe less) at the boat show. You can get it from West Marine, BoatUS or Edson's web page. If you can't find the right part, get back to me and I'll get you the part number.

I agree w/Steve Dion

Please head Steve's advise. If not you will end up with a shifting problem. i.e. your transmission will not want to shif into forward.
