Bimini Top placement

I just purchased a Bimini top from Catalina Direct and we are wrestling with anchor placement. We temporarily attached the anchors just forward of the out drain in the rub rail and in this position there is interference with the main sheet and traveler lines to the boom. One solution seems to be to relocate the main sheet block to the step going to the cockpit and move the attachment point on the boom to a place directly above. This would seem to clutter the cockpit and impede access to the cabin, but would get the main sheet to the front where it would be more convenient for handling. Another solution seems to be to relocate the Bimini approximately a foot forward to clear the rear stay, but the Bimini would then be more over the cabin than the cockpit where it is really needed. What solutions have any of you loyal Catalina 22 folks found for mounting the Bimini? Thanks, Bob

Bimini Location

Please keep us posted on how this works out. I am interested in whether this works out well since I have been considering a bimini for my 84 C22. I don't have an answer for you, but I would suggest that you ask CD. They sold it to you right? They are usually very helpful. Didn't the instructions say where they suggest you mount it? Or was the suggested location just not satisfactory? BTW: If you get it installed to your satisfaction, I would love to see pictures. Pete

Bimini top

I installed a CD bimini on Deadline, our C22, this spring. I used the sliding track mounts that allow you to fine-tune the placement. It's a bit tricky placing the tracks and getting them perfectly parallel, but worth the effort. The tracks were about $30, I think, and came with the sliding mounts. The mainsheet on Deadline clears the bimini with no problem. One added tip. I turned the bimini around, which made it much easier to climb on and off the boat, and helped the bimini fold forward for storage on top of the cabin trunk.

bimini location

Interesting idea of turning it around. that had occured to me but I haven't been out to look and measure. The instructions that came with the top were only for assembling it (and pretty sad and hard to follow!). There were only pictures of the bimini mounted on a motor boat. Nothing to give clues as to mounting it on the 22. There seems to be a nice slot at the rear that the Bimini could fold down into but either way haveing it up will complicate entering and leaving the boat. My swim ladder is mounted on the starboard side about cabin rear position. I think I will mount a stainless steel one on the transom on the same side. Keep the ideas and replies coming. Thanks, Bob

mounting location

My straps eyestraps are: 1.on top of the cabin outside on top of the ridge outboard of the handrails pretty much in line with thw lifline stantion. 2. aft they are in line with the curve on top of the tiller (this is also how I secure my tiller when not in use). The mounting bracket is forward of the winches approx. 12". Set the eystraps in place and play with the lengths to get them close then make sure the back of the Bimini clears the mainsheet. My Bimini was custom but is a standard measure. 36" tall, 72" wide,60" long. I hope this will help. I have had mine since 1984 and have seen many others bite the bullet with no regrets. p.s. my boat is an '84

here is what i did

well you are right the bimini doesnt shade much located forward. and my bigest concern was if it is folded forward then the side deck is not clear for coming into the dock. i singlehand mostly and wanted to easily access the side of the boat by the shrouds for hopping onto the dock and tying up. what ended up was that i mounted it just in front of the mainsheet so it clears and installed 2 camcleets forward on the coming. basicly i have a line on each side of the bimini run to the camcleats which hold the bimini up kind of like an arch . this allows the bimini to not sit on the tiller yet allows access to the motor and controls. when i want to use the top i push the boom over and pull forward and attatch the straps on the hand rail. to lower the sail i close up the bimini but it stays in the up position. i could have used an aft support to do the same thing but it wasnt as removeble for trailering.though in hind sight i think i could have come up with something that would unpin easily. (and that may be the route i go next season) the line works just fine and when not sailing i leave the bimini folded up and down aft across thetiller. with the top up i access the boat over the stern rail and i secured the bimini strap to the lifeline loop on the stern pulpit. sounds wierd till you see it but it works well . i find that unfortunatley that i sail south west in the am and north east in the pm which means that the bimini tends to shade the cabin more than the cocpit.but it i lived at the other end of the lake......well you get the picture. lots of times i anchor form the stern to ensure the most shade. good luck

Solution to Bimini placement

I have ordered the pair of 24" tracks from Catalina Direct for $38.00. They will be installed just forward of the drain slot on the combing. The tracks will come within a couple of inches of the tracks for the jib sheet block and should allow me to locate the Bimini forward enough to clear the mainsheet and the rear mast stay. This will also allow some adjustment of Bimini position fore and aft to satisfy everything. Thanks for everyone's help. Bob
