I just purchased an '87 Hunter 26.5 and would like to add a bimini to the cockpit. Anyone out there with experience on raising the boom and shortening the sail?
It's expensive to shorten the sail, and it alters the sail plan.Better to pursue a half-bimini that stops at the end of the boom. Check this web site for pix of any Hunter 29.5 to see what they look like. You can make your own out of plumbing pipe, or buy one from a reputable canvass shop.
Just bought a bimini from this site and the boom just clears the top. Bimini is well made and easy to install although the canvas fits a little loose. This may be because I didn't bother to install all the hold downs, but they haven't been necessary yet. Waiting for a good blow to find out! Good Winds. Glenn
I raised the boom about 16" and added a reef to the main. When I'm using the bimini, I attach the gooseneck higher on the mast (6 screws) and reef the sail. When I want the full sail area (not very often, but I have the option if I want it) I fold up the bimini and attach the gooseneck in its original position and undo the reef. It's worked great for me and I can stand under the bimini and I'm 6'2". I have also seen where people have raised just the outer end of the boom to make room for the bimini.
Bought one from Cabella's a fishig catalog, for $280 Installed it off the stern rails, slick, if I do say so!!! 36"tall 88"wide,just clears the boom, lots of shade!!! Gary
