One other question: Are the D & S the same dimensions? In other words, can I just use your measurements for my 1988 D?
I think they are except for the top of the coaming. Earlier D's had a step just behind the cabin and laters sloped down like the S's, but if you mount the bimini on the sides that shouldn't influence anything.

.. shims there are a good idea like I showed and I think you can buy them. Also I'd for sure spend the money on...
...the supports that piviot like above. That takes a lot of stress off the tracks. I haven't had problems with the tracks being held tight to the sides, but at some point might thru-bolt them. Our hulls aren't too thick and there isn't a lot there for screws to grab ahold of, but so far the tracks are still secure.
The bimini is well worth it. We couldn't live without it and I like the fact that I fit under it and I'm a little over 6 feet,
