Has anyone added a bimimi to a 28.5? Does it have to be custom made? Im having troube finding a 10' wide bimimi. Any help would be appreciated.

Bimini for 28.5

I just got a custom three frame, 7' wide x 5' long bimini mounted on the forward frame of the stern pulpit made by North Sails, Annapolis this year and am completely satisfied with it. It also has a 12" x 12" sail trim 'window' with roll back canvas panel so I can see the mast head. I had had a new main sail made last year and had it cut to raise the end of the boom to allow more clearance for the boom (about 6'-1" headroom under the bimini). The 28.5 is only 7' wide at the stern pulpit, so I would think that is the maximum width you can get, and with the split backstay and low boom extending back to the steering wheel, I would expect you're going to need a 'custom' fit.

go custom, go aft

Has a custom bimini made for my 28.5 which covers only the aft 1/2 of the cockpit. It extends well off the stern and is high enough to stand under, since the bows are higher than the boom. Call David Constance @ 504-812-8082 and ask him how much to make one for your boat. I love it. I can sit in the shade while my wife is in the sun in the forward part of the cockpit, or , if she wants, she can come back into the shade as well. Dave should still have all the measurements from my boat.

Stepped bimini

Rick, Some interesting replies on this question. I have a 1987 Hunter 285 and although we do have a bimini (which came with the boat when we bought it used two years ago) I'd like to replace it because it's showing it's age and it, in my opinion, dosen't look like it fits just right. We have a few sources righ in town for making a custom bimini and so I'm going to see if they can make me a "stepped" bimini. Now, I've never actually seen one but I'd like to have a bimini that, just behind the area where the boom ends, it raises up (or steps) about six or so inches. I'm average height (5'-11'') but the top of my head rubs on the inside of the bimini when I'm standing at the helm. Seems to be it would require just and extra "bar". I also thought the I could possibly have a window area in the "stepped" part that would allow me to see the mast fly. That would be in the part of the bimini that slants up and away from the lower section. Think of the older Grayhound buses that had that sort of raised roof section. Bob
