Bill asked "When reefing our furling forsail especially in breezes over 15, there is a "bend" in the forestay. I tightened the turnbuckle under the furling drum but still am not completely satisfied. Any ideas appreciated." Bill, I noticed the same on my 240. I also noted that my port upper shroud was going noticeably slack (on a starboard tack) during a good blow. After I trailered the boat, I took a good look at the rigging. To my surprise, the backing nuts on the shroud U-bolts were loose to the point that one would have taken only a few turns to come off. So, check these first. Second, I purchased a Loos tension gauge. I followed the instructions in the owner's manual regarding mast tune. As delivered, both the mast rake and bend were no where near Hunter's recommendations. I'm sure too that the rigging has stretched a little as well. When I finished, I was amazed at the difference in the boat's handling as well as a great reduction in forestay sag. Weekend before last, it was blowing 20-25. I had about 3/4 of jib out and still noted some "bend" but not nearly as much. I was delighted with my adjustments as the boat feels much stiffer now. If you decide to tune your rig yourself, I would make two suggestions. First, don't even think about doing this with the boat in the water. Second, find two good friends to help out. You will need one on each side while you stand at the mast (bring ladders or chairs for them to use). Make sure they know to stay within the wire specs while tuning. Mark Kissel s/v Kittiwake H240
