Bilge

Hi all,
I think my last question got lost in a barrage of other treads Excuse
the repetition. A previous owner attach (I believe it's glassed in) a
foot long length 4" x 4" to the bottom of the bilge and placed the
pump on top. The result is there is always at least 4" of water in
the bilge and it's hard to keep clean. Before I try to remove the 4"
x 4", I was hoping someone could tell me what is directly below the
most forward part of the bilge. I would like to avoid any chance of
causing problems.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

The 4X4 I believe you're referring to was probably put there to
accomidate the placement of the bilge pump. Mine is a 2X6. I don't
know if there is anything below that may cause problems. Instead of
removal, you might consider using your manual bilge pump or a small
hand pump like a Thirsty Mate to remove the addition water. Then mop
the rest up with a short handled mop. This works OK for me.

Now, maybe of greater concern is where the water keeps coming from.
My biggest promblem was from the missing gasket on the bottom of the
cockpit sole and a leaking stuffing box. Once these were corrected I
no longer had water in the bilge and seldom had to clean it up. If I
did, I went looking for the problem.

Hope this helps,
Robert

Thanks Robert. I was able to get the 4x4 out easily with crow bar.
Popped free with very little force. As to where the waters coming
from is the million dollar question. I'm sure some is coming from the
shaft packing. I think most of the water is just there as the was no
way to remove it. I have seen is rise after a heavy rain.

Hi Paul;

why don't you install an electric bilge pump with a float
switch- it's easy- and may cost you around 50 bucks- and
you can rest worrying

I had a leak when I first got Journeyman and once when she was hauled and
there was water in the bilge I noticed water coming from the shoe that holds
the lower rudder gudgeon (at the extreme aft end of the keel). I pulled the
big athwartship bolts that held the shoe and bedded them in compound, and
that was the end of the leak. Maybe that's your problem too.

Hi There,I pulled my fuel tank…what a pain in the butt. If the tank has not been removed in it’s life, there is a good chance that there is 40 years of mud, nuts, bolts and who knows what else. Which wedges against the tank when you are trying to pull it out. Trust me, unless you have fuel running out of the tank…run the other direction. lol. But if you got to do…start drinking now. Hi David,I recently removed the diesel tank from my Vega. Tell you what, it was a pain...Underneath the fuel tank there is about a foot of room until the bottom of the bilge. In my bilge I found an assortment of nuts and bolts, which I assume, were lost similar to your situation. Anyway, the fuel tank is removable, but not easily and I wouldn't recommend taking it out unless you have lost your wedding ring down there!
Happy sailing,
Matias

Originally Vega's had a drain plug in the bilge, for cold climate winter layup draining, so there is space under the tank. My tank was leaking diesel so I decided it had to come out, unfortunately I had to take it out in two pieces and then replace it with an aluminum tank in the STB cockpit locker. If that is the only reason you want to remove the tank, I would think
it would be easier to buy another wing nut. Removing the fuel tank is
not totally easy. Its not totally hard either, but ... just buy another wing
nut. You are gonna drop a lot of stuff in that bilge. Just think of it as
ballast.
