Bilge Pumps

Has anyone installed a bilge pump on their C22? I have mine moored and would like to put one in. Where do you place the drain hose? Is there a special through hull fitting? Thanks Steve Hall

Which bilge?

Steve, I'm wanting to put a pump in my C22 but as you have so many low spots where do you put it??? If water comes in the hatches or windows it will collect in the inner cabin. But if it comes in through the swing keel lock? Going out is easy, where do you put the pump??? I ended up saying the heck with it and insured the hell out of it! Jay

Under the port satee

I have a '92 Wing Keel and installed an automatic biilge pump w/float switch under the forward port satee. I made a small alum "L" bracket to mount them on and attached to the vertical portion of the seat, thus avoiding mounting directly to or through the hull. I ran the discharge hose forward along the port hull to a bulkhead through fitting just foward of the galley countertop and below the gunwale (way above the waterline). I located the OFF-ON-AUTO control switch on the STBD side under the Companionway step. I leave it in AUTO when boat's in the water and unattended. For grins, I also rigged up a small portable bilge pump that plugs into the cig lighter with a long enough hose to discharge into the cockpit sole and out the scuppers.

Never needed one

I've owned my '74 Catalina 22 for three years now and keep it in a slip all season. The boat stays dry except for a teaspoon or so of rain water that apparently leaks in at the bottom of the companion way doors and drains under the step. It dries out if it doesn't rain too often, otherwise I sponge it out. Using a pump is a problem as the hull appears to be compartmentalized. The water does not flow to some central point.

Bilge Pump

Try installing it near the keel cable or near the battery and splice the pump discharge into the cockpit drain lines.

Nukesailor: Is that safe?

Nukesailor: Your response concerns me. Unless a check valve or some kind of loop is used, I am concerned that the line that you suggest would be too low, and water could come in either from under the boat, or from the cockpit (when it is raining hard), and run into the bilge. While backing, I have heard water churning in the cockpit drains, and I believe that I have even had water exit the top of the hose that surrounds the centerboard cable. Have you tried what you have suggested? Did you use a check valve? Aldo

Bilge pumps - 2

Yes I did install it that way and had no problems. In fact, I used the line that goes to the galley sink drain "funnel" (the "funnel" is lower than the cockpit drains and has no check valve). Air normally present in the drain line acts prevents siphoning. This was only a temporary installation and has since been removed - normally a C22 should not need a bilge pump. My C22 (1982) is normally pretty dry. A little rain water gets in through the vents at the stern, but that's about it. I have not seen water come in above the keel cable tube. The waterline seems to be just slightly above where the ball is mounted with the cable "hose" removed.
