I have a '76 catalina 22. I believe there is no motorized bilge pump on this boat, but the there are drains in the cockpit that go into a relief valve that drains through the keel. Is that a bilge pump and do I need to shut the valve when sailing? Is there anything I should be particulary aware regarding this system? Thanks, Jay

no bilge pump on C22

Hello, There is no built in bilge pump on a C22. The C22 is (or at least should be) a dry boat in that there is no propeller shaft to allow water into the boat. I bought a hand pump to use on my boat but I never needed it. Regarding the valves on the cockpit drains (scuppers), they should be left open when sailing so that if a wave comes over the side, or you take a lot of spray, the water drains out. I used to leave the valves open all the time so rain would drain out too. Barry

Drains/Pumps

My Cat 22 has a bilge pump, but I'm pretty sure it was owner installed. It was duct taped to the port center bulkhead just aft of the table. The big deal on those drains is to make sure they are kept clear. If you are in a place where you get leaves in the fall, they can clog up and the cockpit can fill with water. If the boat is in the water, wave action could cause serious problems.

thanks for your help. The thing I dont understand is if you leave the valve open while sailing how does the water not flood the cockpit?

Factory Pump

Jay, Some 22's like my "86 have a factory installed manual pump. The pump is located in the cockpit side wall. The pump itself is under the port seat with a hose running to the low point in the small bilge space and another hose that discharges thru the transom. I hang on a mooring and my paranioa made me add a automatic blige pump, also discharging thru the transom. I leave it on when we leave the boat just in case. There always seems to be a little water in the bilge, mostly rain water I suspect. Also, on the '86 and on, the cockpit drains thru the transom.

Why?

"The thing I dont understand is if you leave the valve open while sailing how does the water not flood the cockpit?" Because the cockpit floor is above the water. Stu
